My counselor didn’t send anything to me (Rod Jackson) I hope my decision will stull be released Friday! What else did the email say @sagh527 ?
@gsbc12 sorry this email is so long but here is the full body:
Early Action/Early Decision applicants to Southern Methodist University (SMU) who were deferred often have questions or concerns about their admission decision and the steps necessary to continue to be considered for admission. Here is a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and answers to address these concerns.
I was deferred; does this mean I was denied?
No! At SMU, a defer decision is not a “polite deny decision.” You are still very much being considered for admission to SMU. Your application will be reviewed by the Admission Committee after February 1. You are not at any advantage or disadvantage by having been deferred. The Admission Committee will admit the best applicants possible, regardless of when the application was submitted. Last year from southern California, 156 students were deferred from Early Action/Early Decision. Of these students, 39 students were later offered admission. For next fall’s entering class, 268 students from southern California were deferred from Early Action/Early Decision.
I was deferred but I know of another student who was admitted with a lower GPA or SAT/ACT score. Why?
Your demonstrated academic achievement (GPA) and performance on standardized tests (SAT/ACT) are just two of the factors considered in the evaluation of your application. Other factors included the rigor of your course selection, activities in and out of school, letter(s) of recommendation, the quality and content of your personal essay, and so on. Ultimately, ALL of these factors were considered. A specific GPA or certain test score does not determine whether a student will be admitted Early Action, Early Decision, or Regular Decision.
Should I submit an entirely new version of my application?
Please don’t! You do not need to “improve” your application or redo/edit/modify parts of it. However, if you would like us to continue to consider your application, please take some time to update it by completing a short on-line form at smu.edu/appupdate. The deadline to complete this on-line form is January 18, 2019. Don’t forget to submit an updated transcript with your first semester/trimester grades as soon as it becomes available. Check with your counselor, Joanne Farrell, if you have any questions on how to do this. We realize that at some schools first semester grades will not be posted until after January 18, 2019. Don’t panic! Please indicate this on your on-line SMU Application Update Form. Also, the biggest “mistake” students make on the Update Form is that they don’t include enough or any “updated” information. By leaving this section blank you are missing a wonderful opportunity to provide us with an update – maybe a new award you’ve received, a recent accomplishment, or an important event that has occurred since you submitted your application. Even if there is nothing “new” to add, you are more than welcome to indicate your continuing interest in SMU and why. The “why” part is critical. Simply writing “I’m still interested in SMU.” does not make a convincing statement to the Admission Committee. If you have already submitted your on-line form and would like to provide additional information because you “accidentally” left this section blank, please send me an email with the appropriate details. I’ll be sure to have this new information added to your application. If you have already sent it to me, rest assured that it has been added to your application.
As indicated above, 39 students who were originally deferred last year were ultimately offered admission. What they have in common is that each of them wrote a heartfelt and insightful statement in response to “Is there anything you wish to share?” – it does make a difference. They also demonstrated solid academic achievement in the first semester of their senior year.
And finally, SMU accepts self-reported test scores; it is important that you update your test score history with any new test results. You may do this through your SMU portal.
I really want to be a Mustang! Can I set up an interview?
We are pleased to know how much you want to attend SMU. We love this place, too! The best way to express your interest is to complete the SMU Application Update Form and share with us, in writing, your enthusiasm for SMU. A personal interview is not a part of the SMU admission process and will not be considered when we look at your application again.
When will I be notified of my final decision?
Your final admission decision will be released on March 8th via your SMU student application status portal.
I hope this information has provided you with some guidance to help you in becoming a Mustang. I have also sent a copy of this email to your counselor so that you may both discuss this email should any questions come to mind.
Finally, if you decide that you are no longer interested in keeping your SMU application active, please let me know so that I may withdraw it
Best wishes for the New Year.
Sincerely,
Rick Diaz
PS There is another option that you might want to consider. If SMU is unquestionably your top choice, you may change your application plan from Early Action to Early Decision II. If you wish to make this change, please send me an email requesting this change. You must also submit an Early Decision Agreement Form. Here is a link to that form. This link will also display Early Decision FAQs and should answer all of your questions.
Thank you so much @sagh527 this was so helpful!
hey guys! anyone know what time decisions will come out?
@collegeIZrubbish 7pm CST
I m a sophomore at SMU (Lyle Engineering). Long time ago, I was a HS senior just like many of you here. I will make it short to sum up whether you should go to SMU (especially Engineering majors).
- They (friends and relatives) said "It’s really good and you should be proud that - UT(Austin) or TAMU - accept admission
- But “WOW, you’re going to SMU”
- I had 3 interviews and two companies offer Engineering internship for Summer 2019… One of them is a very big defense company in McKinney
Has anyone heard from Hilltop Scholars Program?
@applicantXIX Yes, I got the email invitation to be a part of HSP a few hours ago!
@sunshine2019 Me too!
did y’all get financial aid with the acceptance or no?
yeah, I think the finaid comes in the mail! Mine did.
Is there a groupchat for admitted students?
my daughter was admitted but no financial aid in the mail. We looked at it on the portal.
No merit scholarship. She’s thrilled to be accepted, but cost of attendance may be too much for us.
