Great summary…thanks
Anyone know when the ED 2 decisions come out?
Students who apply Early Decision II by the January 15 deadline will be notified by mail by March 1.
Was he offered his second-choice major?
FYI, my son heard from SMU re: Cox back on 1.7…
I recently was accepted into the Honors Program at SMU, what are the advantages of being in such a program? I am interested in biology/premed.
Besides prestige, my kid is in an honors program at UT and it gets him rockstar access to classes and registration. I read about SMU’s program because it was just offered to my daughter, and it sounds similar…special classes, smaller classes, etc. @student737
My daughter received an invitation to apply and hasn’t heard anything. I hope that when someone receives a notification about one or the other of those, they will post here.
It seems like things are a little different than other years. Mine got the invitation late December to send in additional essays for more consideration after getting the Provost scholarship. She also got the letter to send in the Hunt essay and video but I think most students maybe did from what I can tell and it was just a reminder for the deadline. She also just got the Hilltop Scholar invite. It is all a little confusing and overwhelming. I also am wondering what happens now with the extra essays for Presidents and the other scholarships and when.
Hello. Firstly, congratulations to your daughter. I think that anyone can apply for the Hunt scholarship and everyone seems to have gotten the reminder letter. As far as I can tell (I am a bit of a college confidential junkie and some might say helicopter mom…lol), it appears that students who were offered the provost scholarship received the Presidential scholarship application…I don’t know if they all did, but it appears that being a Provost scholarship recipient is almost a prerequisite. Now I guess we just wait…more waiting…ugh!!! Are y’all from Texas? Is SMU your daughter’s top choice?
Yes we are from Texas. How about you? Our situation gets a little more complicated as she was also recruited as a student athlete and getting a little money for that as well. Combined with the Provost there is still some ground to cover so additional scholarships would be great. SMU is her top choice that all being said. Hope your daughter chooses SMU as well.
Very cool. What sport? Yes, we are from Texas. SMU and UT are my daughter’s top choices right now but she is still waiting to hear back from her reach schools on the east and west coasts. That said, with the pandemic and everything going on right now, I would prefer her stay a little closer to home than halfway across the country. SMU is actually her top choice right now but it is all about the money…and she is very pragmatic and has said she will go wherever gives her the most money (which, of course, her Dad and I appreciate). And SMU would have to get within $5000-8000 to UT’s tuition or she will end up a longhorn, and that would be okay too.
We are still waiting for the financial aid package. Did everyone get their financial package who got admitted under EA?
I talked to someone at the Bursar’s office earlier this week and they said financial aid awards would be posted by the end of January. My son is an EA admit and, no, we haven’t received anything yet.
Thanks, we are also waiting for the same.
I wonder why the regular decision deadline was extended to today (1/24)? The SMU Twitter account mentions the extension, but their website still lists the original deadline of 1/15.
I agree that the SMU website should have been updated to show the extended 1/24 deadline. I’d suspect it gets more hits than social media.
A Facebook post on 1/16 said, " We realize many of you have been impacted by COVID-19, natural disasters, and other circumstances beyond your control. With that in mind, we extended our Regular Decision (non-binding) application deadline to Sunday, January 24. Learn more and begin your application at smu.edu/apply! #SMUBound #Classof2025"
I suspect this has more to do with other universities giving slight extensions and SMU also wanting to give some extra time to those with extenuating circumstances. This is also smart because some schools released their EA decisions on or around 1/15 so you could drop in another app to SMU if things haven’t worked according to plans in this crazy year.
My D kept receiving “invite-to-apply” emails every day, and “deadline extended” emails every a couple of days, so she submitted RD application 1 day before the extended deadline. Fingers crossed.
Son admitted on 12/17 but no financial or specific merit info yet. We didn’t submit the CSS Profile until early January though so probably because of that delay.
Son did receive a generous merit award scholarship from the school as well as an additional one at the one for the department. Very exciting. Still waiting on some other schools, but a good relief to know that a school that he has strong interest, financials will not be as much of an issue.
