SMU ED Class of 2025

Hi, I saw you mentioned that “The EFT proved reliable”. I was wondering if your DD actually got any Federal Work Study from the FA office. When I run the estimator, I didn’t see any Work Study suggested on the final result. Best regards!

@DNapier ours was a mix of scholarships and loans. A good friend’s kid got additional grants that weren’t expected (March?). They had more financial need. My daughter has friends who do work study (i.e., campus employment).

If you already have your total financial aid package, check in with the Student Employment Office (stu_employ@smu.edu, Blanton 119) to make sure you are eligible for Federal Work Study.

Thanks so much for the information @tristatecoog. Really appreciated it. No, we haven’t yet, and actually are waiting on the Cox decision. Regarding " A good friend’s kid got additional grants that weren’t expected (March?) ", had your friend’s kid already committed before he/she got the additional money? In other words, do you know if people have to commit first to make them “eligible” for any possible additional grant?

Cox decisions just released. D25 accepted with BBA scholars - check portals!

My son was deferred.

Do you mind sharing your stats? Trying to assess his chances for Regular Admission.

Son was deferred from Cox.

1340 SAT
4.15 WGPA
Multiple AP, V sports, volunteer and leadership.
Was accepted to SMU but no merit aid so on to other schools. Good luck!

My son deferred from Cox also.
1440 SAT
4.0 WGPA
Multiple APs
Lots of extracurricular and service activities

UW4.0
mostly AP’s
varsity sports
debate
numerous leadership positions

no SAT?

My daughter was deferred from Cox as well. 3.8 GPA
33 ACT

We declined her offer of admission. She will be attending Tulane. Best of luck to everyone.

@DNapier that friend’s kid applied ED so had already committed. I don’t think you have to commit to get extra grant funds but seems random. Last year Another friend’s son (1380 sat and top quarter) got surprise grants in March or April from his two public universities that he was considering. I wouldn’t consider him need based.

Got you. Thanks again for the Infor. My DD got the Cox acceptance tonight, not with BBA though. That $5K would definitely help a lot, but anyway we were still very excited.

Did anyone on this thread get the application for additional scholarships that was due earlier this week? Just curious. Also, if any SMU students are on here and have any insight into this, I would love to know. Thank you in advance.

Yes, my son and his friend did for Hunt scholarship

How many students are finalized and get Hunts Scholarship.

last year, 700s applied and only 20 will get it.

Approximately 20 entering first-year students each year will be selected as Hunt Leadership Scholars. Leadership is the primary criterion for selection. Around sixty finalists are invited to interview (the interview is required for consideration for the Scholarship) on a designated day in March.

Due to ongoing health and safety concerns due to COVID-19, interviews for finalists for the Hunt Leadership Scholars Program for will be conducted virtually this year, on Friday, March 12, 2021. We know that visiting campuses is a critical part of your college search process, so each finalist for the Hunt Leadership Scholarship will also receive funding for one airfare and a hotel stay to visit the SMU campus at a time of their choosing. Additional details will be provided to the 2021 finalists when those decisions are released in mid-February.

In 2020, over 700 applicants for the Program were considered. Those invited to interview had shown truly exceptional leadership and service to their high schools and communities. They combined effective, dedicated, and energetic service and the ability to lead others with a spirit of inquiry and a strong sense of social responsibility. Beyond these factors, there are no stereotypes or typical characteristics for the Hunt Leadership Scholars. Their academic intentions span the University – Philosophy, Premed, Political Science, Undecided, etc. – and they have widely varying interests, activities, and backgrounds.
