I don’t think anyone will know exactly how many. I guess for the time being
be happy that you are being considered :).

Son asked to interview for President’s in March. He was told they will interview approx. 85 students & 40 scholarships will be awarded. Hope this helps.:)

Stalking the mailbox paid off today. The Rotunda Scholarship letter, with $2500/yr x 4 yrs. Very happy, very grateful to SMU.

Congrats!
Is this in addition to a Distinguished Scholar offer?
Again, nice work. Every bit helps in this economy.

Good luck.

Absolute congratulations.

It is an interesting way to award scholarships, as opposed to a lump sum! It makes it rather like Christmas morning when the envelopes arrive!

Did you guys apply EA?

Elasticity - Yes, daughter did apply EA. During her interview, her admissions counselor advised her to apply EA. She has been notified of 2 scholarships (Distinguished and Veritas) and received letters stating that she was being considered for 2 more (Meadows and Presidents). According to these letters, the smaller awards are added together, but Presidents Scholarship would supersede other awards, as it covers all tuition and fees.

SB27-- Thanks! Yes, the Rotunda is in addition to the Distinguished Scholar.
Elasticity-- Yes, D did apply early action, but they do not have any advantage for scholarships other than the Hunt. So no worries if you applied Regular Decision.

This is a thread we all read it to find out what awards are coming out, and we’re all wondering if and hoping that we’re eligible for some of them. I read these posts and often think, “Gee, I wonder what his/her stats were”, and so I’ll be first and volunteer my D’s stats and list her awards to date:

GPA (w): 3.6
Class rank: around the 50th percentile
SAT: 2270 (690m / 780r / 800w) but SMU doesn’t consider the writing score.
ACT: 33
Extracurriculars: On a scale of 1-10, about a 7 or 8.

We expected D will get merit awards based mainly on test scores, and the more the GPA and class rank are considered, she’s not going to have a chance at those. To state the obvious, D did not work up to her abilities (source of constant battles in our home!)

Awards received so far: Distinguished Scholar 7500/yr and Rotunda Scholar 2500/yr
Hoping for Meadows Scholar, but since we received no letter (like DTex did) saying D was being considered, I suppose that won’t happen.

Those who’ve been awarded merit money, feel free to post your own stats. And good luck to all.

S got Distinquished and Rotunda, very happy, no indication more under consideration, hope so, 4.0(W), ACT 29, extracurricular 8-9.

SMU a great school, also S likes TCU, another fine school.

I received the Veritas award in addition to the Distinguished Scholar award. I am also being considered for the Presidents Scholarship. I am so excited!

Stats:
GPA (unweighted): 4.0
Class Rank: 1/193
ACT: 32
- I have several extracurriculars with leadership positions in each activity.

@violetsky,
I just wanted to chime in and say that the Meadows Scholar awards did not come until later the year my son applied. I think notifications were in early March. And, like the other awards, I’m pretty sure there’s no advanced notice saying “you’re being considered for this.” The award just arrives. So it may still happen! Good luck!

Btw, what is your daughter’s Meadows focus?

do scholarships and merit aid come only at one time? I heard they go after a lot of kids with aid/scholarships that they are afraid they might not get otherwise or to tease them into considering the campus. If i am a good student but with low ACT scores and lots of activities can I get anything from smu or not? Is this something that I should be calling the financial aid office about? Or do they automatically put me in the pool with the accepted
students?

re Meadows Scholar: This program is relatively new and maybe the process is still evolving. My daughter received a letter, dated January 12, from the dean of Meadows stating “You have been identified as a candidate for the Meadows Scholar program…”. His letter also stated that “You will be notified in late March if you have been chosen as a Meadows Scholar recipient.” Signed by the dean in bright purple ink. These are facts.
Speculation starts here: It’s a letter. It doesn’t mean she has the award and it doesn’t indicate that an applicant that did not receive a letter is out of the running.
The Presidents Scholars page indicates that the initial selection will occur in February and that applicants will be invited for interviews in March. However, at least one accepted student on the SMU forum has already received an invitation to interview. I did not dispute this. I didn’t really want to post all of this, but I have never had the credibility of my posts questioned before. Let’s keep it light.

dtex: S. did indeed get an invite to interview for President’s. The letter from the office of the president of SMU was dated mid-December, with the interviews taking place mid-March. S. applied EA and is National Merit. I believe the dates you referenced were for students who applied under RD.

Wow, dtex. I was a little perplexed by your post. I looked back to see who you might be talking to, because you sounded defensive, re: your credibility and “keeping it light,” but I didn’t see anything “not light” that you might be addressing. So, I thought maybe you were addressing something on a different thread. Then after re-reading all the posts on this thread one more time, it dawned on me … did you think I was questioning your credibility by posting to violetsky that the Meadows award notification didn’t come until March in a previous year? I hope not! I didn’t even read your post until now and I didn’t even notice that you had a D in the running for Meadows.

Violetsky’s post said she hoped her D would hear about the Meadows Scholar award. I wrote to assure her that just because she hadn’t heard from them yet didn’t mean she wasn’t in the running. I wasn’t writing to, or about, you. Violetsky’s post about her D’s stats caught my eye, so I read it and then responded to it.

Maybe you were “talking” to somebody else in your seemingly irritated post. But if you were talking to me, because you thought I was talking to you when I was trying to assure violetsky, then you definitely misunderstood me. I’m having no problem “keeping it light.” I certainly wasn’t diputing or contradicting anybody. I was merely trying to share my son’s experience with the Meadows Scholar award. Turns out things are different now, apparently, since they’re sending out notices earlier. But I didn’t know that, and my intentions were to be helpful.

I have received veritas, distinguished scholar, and a departmental scholarship (engineering). Now waiting to hear about President’s. Good luck to everyone on here!

Congratulations, aGGieENGiNeeR! My son will be applying next year as an engineering student. Can I ask about your departmental scholarship? Does it have a certain name? And if you don’t mind sharing, how much is the award? Are there several different amounts that are offered, or does everybody who gets a departmental award get the same amount?

Congrats once again! Would love to hear about the President’s as you learn more!

Simplelife: I believe the highest amount engineering gives is $10K a year for 4 years/$40K total. DS has received that amount, and it is called the “Engineering Fellows Scholarship”. When we met when engineering, they stated that the $10K was the highest amount. It can be stacked with most other scholarships but not the President’s or the Hunt. We were told the amount given by the department varies but is largely based on test scores. Hope this helps. :)

Yeah I got engineering fellows scholarship.
