Today, one was fluff. But one was a notification that she had been accepted into the University Honors program? I’m confused how that connects, or doesn’t, to Dedman Scholars, which she applied to last week. I know this thread is about Presidential, but it anyone knows more about this honors program, that would be great. She didn’t apply for it, but they want her to save her spot by filling out a form.
@revenant72 When did your son receive his invite? Did he apply early decision?
@Meadow530 SMU has several honors programs and it is sometimes possible to be in more than one. The University honors program is for all eligible students (across colleges and majors), Dedman is specific to Dedman college. There are others also such as BBA scholars, Hilltop scholars, etc. (Lyle probably has one as well). And of course Presidents (and Hunts). Many of these have potential merit $ attached although not UHP. I’m not sure how much of these programs are substance and how much is marketing…
Thank you! I see what you mean. It looks like Dedman Scholars comes with a 4 year merit scholarship, but UHP is mainly about the typical benefits such as smaller class sizes, study abroad and internship opportunities, and an honors project, etc.
I’d love to know the numbers for Dedman Scholars. I’ll start another thread about that.
@Meadow530 here’s one: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/southern-methodist-university/2117075-smu-non-admit-scholarships-post-invites-and-notifications-here-presidential-hunt-discovery-other.html#latest
@manyquestions01 and @revenant72: congrats on Presidents invite! Did either of you apply to TCU and if so were you invited to Chancellor’s weekend?
For those who got the PS invite-- I’m a current PS who will be interviewing kids in the spring. If you have any questions I’d be glad to help out. Just send me a PM!
Has anyone else received the invite for Presidential scholarship? My DD applied Early Action but no word yet.
No invite for PS yet, but checked the mysmu login last night and financial aid was updated for us. Listed merit aid, work study and loan offers.
@txmom2023 - I didn’t even know about this. The mysmu seems to be different from the admissions portal. To set one up - do we just need the application ID? I didn’t see any reference to this before. My D sets all of this up, so just need to point her in the right direction.
Yes, my D got an email a while back to set this up using an ID they gave her. When she first set it up, it said “No Financial Information Available”. But, last night she checked it and it had everything listed.
In regard to seeing scholarship info on the mysmu portal, does it matter if the student hasn’t yet accepted the admit offer? My DD’s portal account doesn’t show her Provost or Dedman Discovery scholarship.
@txmom2023 Have you accepted your admission offer yet? My financial aid page is still blank
No. My DD is waiting for a decision from another school before she decides.
No, she has not accepted anything yet. Looks like from last year that the Financial Aid pages came up at different times for people.
Just an update, since I referenced the website time line for PS notifications earlier. We attended a local reception in our area for the Cox business school admitted students and alumni. We talked with the Associate Dean, and he told us that he thought all of the invitations for PS had already gone out for those who applied EA. Disappointing to hear since DS didn’t get an invitation (Provost, BBA) and I’m not sure that’s the official word, but if some of you are still wondering, I thought I’d let you know what he told us. I have no idea if there will be another batch of invitations for RD applicants. He did say that the Hunt invitations have definitely not been completed yet, so if any of you or your students applied for that, there’s definitely still hope for it.
@gamom2023 My D applied for Hunts. Her and probably 500 other people. I thought those came out in mid February. Did you get the impression those are coming out sooner?
@3mamagirls I think that is still correct for Hunt. He didn’t say a timeline for it, just that they definitely had not completed those, unlike the President’s which he was pretty sure had been completed. The reason I posted my update is because the web site link I posted earlier about PS indicates February as well, but it seems to have already been done, at least for EA applicants.
I’m thinking this ship has sailed for us. No Presidential invite so far, and we applied EA. Daughter was invited to UHP (no money as far as I can tell) and interviewed for Dedman Scholars by phone yesterday. It’s worth up to 10k per year and she says she “crushed it”, and the opportunities DID sound very enticing for her, as a public policy major. But it’s just not going to be enough to bring cost down to a doable range for us, even if she is selected.
30K Provost plus 10 for Dedman means a COA of 36. (Either they just released the 2019-20 numbers or I missed them earlier, but it appears that tuition went up 2000, leaving a sticker price of 76,700 for COA, which is utterly ridiculous.)
Am I missing other merit opportunities? Because right now, it seems like we scratch this off the list and move on. We did email her admissions officer and ask to confirm that there is not a PS invite coming. But assuming there is not, we won’t pay that much given other acceptances and potential acceptances we have at better values.
I’ll post here his response.
I hear you. We did not hear back either and will scratch off SMU from our list.
