So...D'you know what my chances are!!!

Hi guys i am new member. I an international student in Australia, Sydney. I want to do do B Science and eventually end up doing medicine. Can you please tell if i have any chance at being admitted to a good school (probably in top 40s). Here they are:

Recieved an uai (university admission index) of 92.5- Not like a percentage, calculated by board, very complicated as it takes into account numerous things.

Captain/Prefect of House (in an previous school)

Captain of Chemistry

Accelerated/fast-tracked in chemistry from yr 10 to yr 11.

Medallion of Geography class in yr 12 and runner-up in 11.

Taken a varied and tough group of subjects.

Won numerous medals in table tennis (2) singles and doubles (2).

Played inter-school cricket, soccer and basketball.

Been a member of Science Club (before it was shut down).

Member of Environmental Water-testing group- Recorded and tested water-quality of local creeks and provided statistical information to council.

Member of Interact Club.

Gone to many leadership and training schools (select group of selected prefects).

Achieved numerous awards.

I have not taken the SATs, however, will still be able to tell me about my chances of being admmited into the good private and public universities. Thankyou.

Although this is not related to this post at all, I would like to say that I would love to have a roommate with a British accent. That would make me quite happy. British accents are bad-ass.

Haha, agreed fakesnake00: British, and indeed all European English accents, are awesome. I plan to visit Ireland some day not because I have strong Irish roots, but rather because I want to pick up the accent (gotta love that R-trilling) and learn the art of dropping F-bombs without offending people. ;)

Parminder:

Being an international will definately put in a bracket onto yourself. Most international students applying to top universities are quite accomplished in one area or another, ex: Math, Chemistry, Physics Olympaids to name a few.

I personally do not know about your accomplishes and how competitive they are or not. Given your situation that you are in year 12, I would strongly recommend studying hard for SAT's & SAT II's (or ACT if its offered internationally), since they will be a crucial factor for internationals who are competiting with accredited people from all over the world.

For more info on International life at UChicago, why don't you read their blogs:

any more questions, more than happy to answer.

Thanks a million for your deep thoughts Chicagonobel. I forget to mention that i am in the top 5% of the class. However, if i were to apply for medicine, which is the field of my interest, after completing B Science (in medicine) and honours, would my chances be improved with a GPA of around 3.68. One more thing do you know what my gpa would be from what i have written in my stats, seeing that it is not just simply a percentage. Thank you

Considering that you are in the top 5%, your GPA should be fine. It seems that your dream is to come to America to study and do medicine:) In America, you will spend 4 years for undergrad, in which you can major in pre-med or anything your choice. After this, you shall apply for med. school, which will take 4 more years. Then, you shall do residency for 3 years, if i am not mistaken. Finally, few more years for specialization, if you choose to specilize. My parents, indians also, often advise me to go to India to study medicine, right after 12th grade--which will skim 4 years from my study. But, studying at UChicago can open your mind to many worlds...which will help you better understand yourself and your place in the world. Enough of my rambling and back to your questions...

"would my chances be improved with a GPA of around 3.68." In regard to this, I can't quite comprehend this, but a GPA of 3.68 will be fine for undergrad. When applying to Med. School, your GPA will also have to be in the same bracket.

3.68 will get you in most of the colleges in top 40. If your passion is to medicine, I would advise you to look into UNC chaple hill--which has solid programs in medicine for undergrads. Since you are senior, the dead lines for applying to college, RD, is coming to a close...for most of them around the end of Dec. So, if you do something, you should plan carefully and hurry. Good Luck.

For Fakesnake and Brinestorm, i think this guy's from Australia.. not Europe. You know the difference btw a European English accent and an Aussie accent right? :)

Of course, I had the pleasure of befriending an Aussie...

I just had to preface my previous post with "Although this is not related to this post at all"

I was born in Poland and whenever I go back to visit, I converse with friends who have learned English... they're all Britons!

The aussie education system is considered significantly superior to the american system by most educators. Based on this I would say that you are a shoe-in at Chicago and probably over qualified. By the way I know absolutely nothing about the australian education system and this entire post is bubcuss.
