So I hear no one has fun at Uchic?

Obviously, an exaggeration. But really, isn't Uchic known for having no fun? Tell me what it's like, and please don't be biased (this is the uchic forum afterall)

Drug culture? Alcohol? Parties? Give me the whole picture

It’s a highly intellectual environment, people will be talking about politics, philosophy and the world in general frequently. People go to UChic to learn, not party.

We didn’t come here to party, but it doesn’t mean we don’t. I know people who go out 4x a week. I live in a “nerdy” dorm, and we have great parties with DJs and bartenders at least a few times a quarter. My house is home of an annual lingerie party. It’s not a state school atmosphere, but in general if you want it, it’s there.

I have heard that from several people that attend but I don’t go there so I can’t really judge :D

Just sayin’, the other ‘nerdy’ dorm throws way better parties :P.

One thing that’s helped is that there are more undergraduates these days (about 5,000) vs. around 3,600 or so in the past. That means more activity on campus. Plus, you’re in Chicago (not that you’ll ever get out of the library. But at least the new one has a glass dome so you can see outside and remember there’s a world out there.)

My friend goes there and hates it. She went there over Duke because she liked the idea of a “quirky” community, but she never has time to participate in the activities they publicize because she’s always busy studying. They market themselves very, very well, but UChicago’s definitely not for everyone, and definitely less fun than they make themselves sound.

Ok i feel like I’m cheating on my love… I was lying about my friend… she loves UChicago, I do too.

My experience has been that the party culture exists if you want it, although more in some dorms than others (like South Campus and Max P). However, it isn’t overwhelming and a lot of people don’t go to parties. It’s not exactly Florida State
This being said, I don’t think that makes it less fun. I love the people at the University of Chicago. They’re some of the most interesting, intelligent, thoughtful people I’ve ever met. We’ve got a weird rep, which somewhat deserve, but I think it’s a good thing.

Not fantastic parties compared to something like a state school, but definitely on par with Columbia and I would guess similar to some of the other ivies but I haven’t visited them.

Bar night Wednesday; Frat parties Thrusday; Apartment, Frat parties and smaller parties with friends in dorm Friday and Saturday.

Alcohol: As much of it as you want. Not controlled in the dorms and it doesn’t matter if your RA or RH sees you drinking as long as it don’t have alcohol in the hallways/common rooms (it does happen anyway, just discretely).

Other drugs: I’m against them, but from what I see there is no shortage of pot if you go looking for it. Not too much of anything else, at least not in the open.

You will tend to get the opposite opinion on this forum just because of the type of people who tend to hang out on CC. However, at UChicago you will also get plenty of people (although not a majority) who while they work hard, also like to go out and party.
