So I shotgunned.. what's the big deal?

@Hawkace‌ I’m really not sure at this point what I want to be. That’s one of the reasons the schools are all over the place. I like to keep all options open until the last minute. Strongly leaning to finance obviously, but who knows? I’ve actually eliminated Indiana, and I might be eliminating UNC Chapel Hill (it’s due tomorrow) but I haven’t decided yet.

@JustOneDad‌ As a scientist, perhaps, you could explain to me how they would associate “Baloney1011” with my application? I’m afraid this is just a return to the all-seeing eye mentality, which I can’t take seriously. It is impossible to determine my identity, short of hacking CC, finding my IP address, associating it with my home address, etc.

I don’t know what you are talking about with the “seeing eye mentality”. If you do get in at a reach, I suppose there’s even a possibility that they did identify you, liked your approach and selectively gave you admission. If you don’t, we’ll never know why it was for sure.

@JustOneDad‌ The all-seeing eye mentality was a subject I brought up earlier in the thread, and a mentality that many people on this forum and elsewhere seem to have. The idea that adcoms have an “all-seeing eye” at their disposal, which can track applicants’ very thoughts, and allow adcoms to find out the most minute details about applicants (like the “genuine interest” an applicant has in a college). I find this idea more than a little absurd.

With all due respect, the idea of an adcom identifying me here is so improbable that I don’t believe it is worth the time to ponder it.

By the way, to everyone claiming that I would never get into an Ivy because of my 3.65, check this out: http://admission.princeton.edu/applyingforadmission/admission-statistics

The acceptance rate for people with GPA 3.60-3.69 is 4.9%. Overall acceptance rate is 7.4%. The acceptance rate for people with my GPA isn’t drastically smaller than the overall acceptance rate. But if we just look at the acceptance rate for people with my ACT score… 14.8%.

Obviously this analysis isn’t statistically or mathematically sound because I’m only taking into consideration two factors, when many more factors play a role, but I would say between my GPA and my scores I still have an above-average shot of getting in.

And based on the deviation, it seems as if scores have a greater impact than GPA… not sure if that’s statistically sound either but that’s what it looks like.

Chances are those applicants probably had some sort of hook (URM, recruited athlete, first generation, etc.). What’s your hook?

Agree with @tola2015‌, those who are admitted with the lowest stats are the ones that are hooked

I wonder what portion of those accepted applicants with GPA 3.60-3.69 are varsity athletes?

Interesting theory.
I wonder if it is correct.

@JustOneDad‌ Well, you still haven’t theorized how they could possibly go about identifying me lawfully…

@Baloney1011 I’m sure adcoms use this site too. I know that Dean J from UVA posts occasionally.

@loquatical‌ Oh, I know. I’m familiar with Dean J. But “Baloney1011” does not, as far as I know, appear anywhere on my application. :stuck_out_tongue:

Of course they do but I would also doubt they’d be able to identify him solely by his CC account. What adcom would have the time for trying to do that anyway?

You’ve listed your transcript, test scores (2400 is pretty unique), and your senior center EC. It’s probably not going to happen, but it’s possible.

@loquatical he/she didn’t actually get a 2400 that was the predicted score that never came to fruition.

@tola2015 lol, whoops. I should read more closely next time.

^so there we have it I guess… :))

No adcom is finding out this identity.

Thankfully you haven’t disclosed super specific stuff like awards. Those are easily googled (yes, I’ve tried. It worked).

This is entertaining. I am in the same boat as @Baloney1011, and he is speaking everything I have in mind. Go Baloney1011!! Make me proud! lol. This is a very intense debate, and it is quite interesting. Keep it going. Maybe this thread will keep me awake during English class.

@fretfulmother don’t be mislead by Austin.

Thanks for the heads-up, all, about looking for OOS merit aid at U-MI-AA. I’m not one to be convinced by any anonymous source on the internet  (though I actually think that if a teen is able to post intelligently, why shouldn’t I listen to him/her) - It turns out that U-MI-AA is one of the schools that is fairly opaque as to what happens for OOS merit, and also there seems to be wild variation year to year if CC threads are to be believed. Sorry for distracting from the main thread.
