So I think Georgetown is the worst place on Earth...

How are my chances at Brown, Dartmouth, Duke, Cornell, Columbia, Amherst, and Middlebury?

HS GPA: 3.90 unweighted, 2nd in class, AP scholar
SATs: 1490/2250
SATIIs: 690/770/670
Big time rower (rowed at nationals, stroke of heavyweight varsity 8) but got a herniated disc last year and I can't compete anymore
otherwise: 5 awards given to only 1-2 people in southern CT, a couple school-specific
1 Publication (Fetal-fibronectin and its implications for preterm delivery)
3.8-4.0 expected for this semester (taking Bio/lab, Chem/lab, Calc 2, Spanish 2 intermediate)
Also received EMT cert this semester, and am going to be EMTing next semester
reasons for transferring: hate the people here, hate the professors, hate the ta's, hate the low endowment/crappy facilities/crappy gym/horrendous research opportunities/urban environment/congested campus
of course, these won't all be included in my essay, I just thought they would add some context. Thanks!

what don’t you like about the people in GTown? If you think they’re snobby, don’t bet on a nicer bunch at most of the schools you’re looking at.

“reasons for transferring: hate the people here, hate the professors, hate the ta’s, hate the low endowment/crappy facilities/crappy gym/horrendous research opportunities/urban environment/congested campus”

Read?

emucla he obviously did read it…
anyways, im curious as to the specifics as well, im interested in transferring to georgetown

I kinda like Gtown. But I can see why perhaps you might not love it. But I don’t see how a place like Columbia will solve your problems (urban, congested).

Brown, Dartmouth, Duke, Cornell, Columbia, Amherst, and Middlebury- You have a chance at some of them but the reality is that they are incredibly selective. I advise adding Northwestern to the list, its less hard on transfers as the top LACs and Ivies.

the kids here all have superiority complexes, that mask extreme feelings of insecurity. Everyone has a chip on there shoulder because they didn’t get into this place or that place, and this adds to the competitive atmosphere…almost like everyone has something to prove. Everyone in SFS is a stanford reject, and reminds you that they should have gotten in there every time they talk to you. As a result, everyone is a complete jerk: they all try to project the image that they should have gotten into wherever and that they are “cooler” than everyone else

And slipper, you’re right: I probably won’t end up looking at Columbia. I would love to go rural.

however, what really bothers me is georgetown’s pitiful endowment, and the fact that they channel what little money they have away from the sciences (I am a biochem major/premed). The results in extremely poor professors and research, and a crapload of TA’s.

*and thanks for the advice on northwestern: I’ll look into that.

Also, the classes are jokes. The language department was more intense at my high school, as was the science department. And forget about the math department: we covered more material last year in my night class at Fairfield U than we have this semester (for whatever reason they made me repeat all of last year’s math classes).

Last, the social scene is horrendous. Horrendous. I picked georgetown over hopkins because i went to an all guys high-school, and wanted to have a little more fun in college. WRONG CHOICE. If you manage to get into a party as a freshman guy, it will be so packed to capacity that you will be forced to leave. Ruit? forget it. Flip cup? nope. You’ll be lucky if you have room to walk.

And as for another school solving my problems: I went on recruiting trips to dartmouth, brown, and amherst for rowing…amazing. the kids were incredibly more relaxed, friendly, etc. In fact, I really didn’t like georgetown even when I came on a recruiting trip here. Thats my 2 cents.

also: what about uva? would that be a good safety school?

you’re not going to the right parties

so interesting to read this. i’m a science major who was seriously considering georgetown last year…the poor facilities, teachers, and research opportunities enumerated by the OP were the main reasons i did not ultimately choose to attend gtown. i don’t know enough about the school to confirm or deny the validity of his statements, but i’m fairly confident that no one at the current school i attend would share a similar sentiment at all.

anyways, good luck with transferring, and maybe i’ll see you at NU next year.

I agree with slipper1234. Additional schools to consider: Rice University & Washington University in St. Louis as well as the University of Rochester. Williams College is reported to be strong in the sciences. Brown’s endowment, although substantial, is not on par with the other Ivies & some students have complained about the facilities at Brown (mostly dorms & gym).

wow thanks a lot for all of the replies guys: I’ll let you know how it all goes!

hey,
you asked if uva would be a good safety…
well, personally, i didn’t like uva at all, because of the whole vibe going on campus.
if you like Southern-Preppy-White-Conservative-Evangelical Christian-Popped Polo/Lacoste-Sundresses-Football etc…than go to uva.

If you want a rural setting, go to Darmouth. My friend is a freshman there and he says its amazing. We talked about how it being in the middle of nowhere may have been a problem, but he wasved it off saying that the people were friendly, parties were awsome and classes were small. Look into it and a few other schools like:
Sophie Davis
Hopkins
And if you apply to brown, apply to the PLME program and good luck dude!
