so i'm in quite a dilemma...(legal record)

Alright so here is the deal,
Last summer i was arrested for a misdemeanor possesion of weed and for it i was put on probation and was given a withhold of adjudication. Well because of this withhold of adjudication it was going to be able to be expunged from my record so i didnt put it on my college applications because it would have been gone before i enrolled. Well i screwed up and failed a drug test and i may lose my withhold of adjudication. Well i was accepted to the University of South Florida and because of my situation i feel i should let them know about my legal situation. I am currently in outpatient rehab for my marijuana use, it was completley voluntary and i feel its going to do alot of good for me. I got a 1350/1900 on my SAT and i have a 3.2 GPA and go to a private school. Good extracurricualrs and i plan on Sailing at USF. Now my question to you is... what are my chances of keeping my acceptance if i let them know, are they going to respect the honesty or are they going to shoot my down due to my initial misunderstanding of my obligations?

thanks for any input

please any advise is urgently needed, i need to figure this out this week

You need to write to the admissions office. Tell them why you didn’t include this information in your original application, and be honest about what has happened since then. The staff at your rehab center should be able to help you compose your letter. They may also be able to write a letter about your progress to date, and their evaluation of your capacity to keep out of trouble in the future.

Wishing you all the best.

Not saying you should or shouldn’t report it to the college, but just wondering, is there some other way they’d find out if you didn’t tell them?

Talk to a lawyer, not uninformed strangers on a message board.

^Agree, I would ask a lawyer about this right away. You may not have to tell them (especially since your voluntary rehab will be looked at favorably, from a legal standpoint), so why risk getting your offer of admission revoked?

yes i would consult a lawyer. and although its unethical, i probably would suggest not telling them, as long as it wont backfire.

Honestly, if they had no way of finding out I personally wouldn’t tell them. However, I don’t know much about what their powers are so I would, as others have suggested, consult a lawyer.

One of the hallmarks of rehab, if I understand it correctly, is to stand up and take responsibility for your actions. “If I don’t tell them, how will they find out?” is not doing so and could undermine your recovery.

Tell them and take your lumps.

Chedva is right. Talk to your rehab counselor or 12-step sponsor about this situation.

Also look into how this will affect your Financial Aid and consider if you can still afford to attend this school (if they don’t rescind).

Sure, you can be a good little boy and tell them whats up. But realistically, they aren’t paying a P.I. to find out every little detail about the thousands of kids enrolling at their university.

Dont tell them. Just dont do drugs in college because if your caught, the old records just might pop up and then mild punishment could turn into expulsion… OR WORSE. Talk to a lawyer.
