So is my SAT actually competitive for top schools?

I applied to mainly top 25 schools, and I’m curious about how this factors in. For reference, I am a white male, and I am majoring in statistics. Also, let’s get discussion going for what is competitive for other people.

M: 770/800
EBR&W: 700/800
Essay: 23/24

1470 is OK at best… disastrous at worst

There are more factors than just test scores and ethnic/gender. A white male with these scores who can throw a baseball 98 MPH, or shoot 90% from the 3 point line and dunk, or whose legacy dad is a multi-billionaire willing to donate a building or ten, is are a shoo-in.

Any student with these scores who also has a perfect GPA, loads of ECs, and once-in-a-generation rec letters, will be strongly considered.

If these test scores go with a mostly B+ / A- student who is ranked in the middle third of his class, then his chances are slim (unless he falls under my first paragraph).

A 1470 is more than OK and nowhere near distastrous. It’s probably around the 98th percentile, right? There is a lot of debate about what the new scores mean with respect to the old SAT, especially when you get above the 1400 mark. If you want to try to break 1500, you could try a second time, but I would guess that your SAT is not going to be what makes or breaks your application.
