So, ive considered becoming a surgeon..

However I have a condition called Hyperthyroidism. One of the symptoms i have is trembling hands...Should i just give up on becoming a surgeon now? My mom said people with hyperthyroidism can't become surgeons and stuff. because of shaky hands. (I think I have a small case but still i have it..) I love biology and anatomy, but is a becoming a surgeon out of my reach?

I'm pretty ignorant, so take what I say with lots of grains of salt. This is my guess.

If your hands still shake by MS4, I'd say forget about - you simply can't be a surgeon if your hands shake. If you can get your hand-shaking under control through medication or whatever, then you might still have a chance.

I take medication for my hyperthyroidism condition. i mean...its not like my hands are shaking so extreme... i think there's some shaking... minimal. Surgeon is just one of the possibilities im throwing out. I'm going to be senior next year. I have many other job to choose from, so its not the end of the world.. if i don't become a surgeon. I've just heard from my mom that people with hyperthyroidism can't become a surgeon.

While colleges won't ask you what medical conditions you have (correct me if I'm wrong) , but I think you shouldnt consider being a surgeon. What if your doing a surgery and your hands start trembling and shaking as your about to perform surgery on the person's brain....you could possibly kill the person. Bt that being said, you could become something else in the medical field. Something like a physician, pediatrician....

theres a lot more in medicine than surgery...lots of different options and routes

i know. gracias.

Like a few others have said, if the condition starts to disappear as time goes on, then you could consider surgery. But surgery is a very delicate process, where even the natural shaking of the hands (from pulse/breathing/etc) can create a risk. Don't let go of surgery, but do consider alternatives.

The best thing to do is just get to medical school. Many people go to med school without the slightest idea of what field they want to work in (cardiology, neurology, etc. etc.). Once you're in, you'll be able to make a full decision.
