So let's talk about housing

Thanks! Yeah, I kind of figured that I’d need to fill it out later. No problem - I print out a copy so I’ll just copy the information over. Mail back? :frowning: I’m an international student and it’s going to take so long to get there (well, without the 200 yuan express fee - which I’ll pay… cries)

If the housing form needs to be done offline, things must have changed since last year. The form I filled out online after enrolling was the only one I needed to complete. In fact, the current student housing form has been off Bannerweb for at least a month, so there’s not really a chance that they filled that one out, I don’t think.

From the Class of 2015 Facebook page, via the Admissions and Housing offices:

We’re seeing a lot of housing questions, so here’s the scoop! You can complete your housing form by logging into the Smith BannerWeb system. Instructions for completing your housing form will be included in your welcome packet, which are being sent weekly, beginning with this week. The deadline to complete the housing form is June 21, and you will be emailed your housing assignment by July 15. Hope that helps!

omgomg - the welcome packets are being sent already? Awesome! I’m so excited to go to Smith I just want to get involved and ready asap

Ah ok! See, this is what happens when you get old, things change on you and you give bad info

So now that you have the information, you all know what to do. Good luck!

S&P, I had the same momentary discontinuity when the news made the switch from the town crier to newspapers. These new-fangled changes, I tell ya…

I’m assuming the welcome packets are only being sent to students who have sent in their deposits? My mom hasn’t let me send in mine yet because she’s still trying to haggle for more financial aid, so I guess I shouldn’t be expecting anything yet :frowning: I hope it’ll all be worked out soon though. I’m really eager to start filling out all the paperwork :D

That’s correct they don’t send the packets out until you’ve sent in the deposit. Wouldn’t make sense otherwise I guess.

Just got an email confirming that my housing form was received  guess I don’t have to fill it in again after all! so, so excited!

I"m glad! Sorry to have given bad advice.

D just got the “no longer a prospie” packet with the PAPER housing form. Not quite the “run around the house” packet of the previous “Smith likes you” packet, but understandable given she is moving to the logistics stage.

In terms of timing, we had electronically paid the down payment on the 16th, so it took a week for the packet to get to the NYC metro area for those scoring at home.

Nice sheet in the packet had helpful house specifics like pop., construction (some in 1810), most recent renovations (luckily, not 1810) and whether there is in-house dining, how many singles vs. doubles, if reserved for Ada’s, etc. So if you need more info, put down your mouse and await this info sheet before choosing.

D had already done the housing form electronically, since she was immediately (and only) Quad focused despite Dad’s admonition that walking to the fun parties gives more control than living amongst them. However, I had again ceded ground on this issue (like most issues) as I had heard that Animal House is not the model for Smith Quad parties. However, it is impressive that Smithies can get tea delivered in large kegs…must be the Econ dept’s research into buying in bulk for savings.

The packet also includes some sensible quotes from current Smithies and lots of intake forms to fill out. We were surprised by how much is still done by paper. Not a knock on Smith, just that much have the world appears to have migrated to online and we’ll have to dust off that pen thingy. So I guess it is not my “Mission Accomplished” moment now, or even when we deliver our D’s FIRST of many U-Haul’s of shoes in late August, but hopefully in May of 2015.

To those parents still awaiting their D’s May 1st decisions on going to Smith, a warning:

This story may help you get your D to choose Smith since even this Smith alumna was unable to help her child who went to great schools, but probably the wrong fit.

I know of a Smith alumna’s older son who had graduated both Yale (undergrad) and Harvard (grad school). While he had his MBA (Harvard no less) he had not been successful in business for years. Now, while working in the military, on May 1, 2003, he had to fly out to answer questions about his military career as well.

Odd note: May 1st is the “decision date” for your daughter and the same May 1st decision date for him as well. You can imagine the Mom’s concern, this being yet another set of questions about her son’s career.

I failed to note, nn that May 1st, the son had actually piloted the jet to the meeting, and when landing, a Mission Accomplished banner “mysteriously” unfurled on the USS Abraham Lincoln. Yet, 8 years later, that man is out of a job, still confused, and relegated to cutting brush in Texas while working at building a library (at least one noble pursuit). The Mission he started is unfortunately still winding down.

Don’t let what happened to this Yale/Harvard grad happen to your D. She deserves better, she deserves Smith.

Of all the Busch folks, I tend to think history will value the Smithie pretty highly. No doubt Mrs. Busch must also ask the following question, but perhaps in better English:

“Rarely is the questioned asked: Is our children learning?” --President Busch, Florence, South Carolina, Jan. 11, 2000

My apologies to Yale and Harvard. Their schools are quite fine, but their obviously very overworked Admissions staff made mistakes and clearly the profs had a hard time working with this totally under represented minority.

Good luck in your D’s decisions!

Forgive me, brie, but I’m having a hard time seeing where your warning really applies in this instance…

Sorry, this needed a rewrite. My plea for an extension. Grade me incomplete.

No, it wasn’t bad advice at all S&P  It all worked out in the end

The Smithie’s son in this example didn’t actually pilot the jet himself. He wore the flight suit, though.

are housing costs more expensive if you live in a single?

No. Everyone at Smith pays the same amount for room and board regardless of if they live in a single, double, or suite. The only people who are an exception to that are people who live in the Friedman apartments, the two co-op houses, or Adas living in Ada apartment housing.
