Maybe it's time to start ranking threads.

dhl3: where'd everybody go?

BedHead, did you even read my first post all the way to the end? Just curious, because if you have, then you wouldn't have made that post...

I've been using the tiers as they are assigned in/by the US News rankings.

Well no one seemed to have responded to your question, and to me it seems like a pretty transparent question since you already seem to know your answer. It's just a re-statement of "how do you rank schools"?

What were your criterion when you posted the following tiers a few days ago on another thread? I am sure you had strong criteria in mind.

"Quote:
Tier 1: UBC/UCLA/UCSD

Tier 2: UCI/UCD/UCSB

Tier 3: UCSC/UCR/UCM

Well, I've always thought UCSD was in its own league... it doesn't quite match up to the level of Berkeley and UCLA in terms of prestige and name value, but it's surely above the rest... So I would rank it:

Tier 1: Berkeley, UCLA
2: UCSD
Tier 3: UCSB, UCI, UCD
Tier 4: UCSC, UCR, UCM

Just my opinion though..."

everyone uses "tier-#" categorization in anyway they want, and some of them can be wrong because they may not understand what "tiers" really mean and just assume that it means what they think it means. And I have to say when I made the Tier List, I really didn't fully understand what it means.

I'm just asking if there is a universal list of "tiers" that everyone refers to, or is the whole "tier" thing just a way of expressing their opinion? According to some of the people who responded here, they seem to base their "tier" thing mostly on the U.S. News & World Report college ranking.

And perhaps what I'm most curious on is... would all the universities mentioned in U.S. Newsweek ranking be considered 1st tier? or just top 50? or top 20? 10? 5? Cuz believe it or not, I've seen so many different "tier" categorization made by variety of people in this board. Some people think 1st-tier should only consist of top private universities that are well within the top 10 list of u.s. news, while other people say 1st-tier should consist of ALL the schools mentioned in the top 120 (i dunno the specific number) school list of U.S. newsweek. There are also issues like "there's nothing below 3rd tier" while other people say "there can be as many tiers as you can make".

So I just want some clarification on those.

Are top 25 Uni in USNEWS the only well regarded Uni in USA? anything outside is not worth a 2nd look or just plain condemn by American or International students.

what about those going for Biz or Engineering, they should look deeper or maybe consider what last yr USNEWS put out.

should 1 be more concern about the overall ranking or major related?
