So...why is Psychology a useless major?

LOL, you could do just about any major and go to law school.

As for Psychology its not useless. The BA usually is though. Like with History and English Psych is a major that most people will need at least a Masters to make decent money.

If you are sure you want to b a psychiatrist it is definatly not useless.

My son wanted to go into School Psychology which is at a "specialist masters/66 hours) or PhD at many schools. He loved Psych, minored in econ/spanish and never looked back.
He found his classes interesting and challenging at times and grad school was definitely a bump up.
His field isn’t highly paid, but no low either and there is a need for them. US News had it as a top 10 field a few years back for growth in the next decade.

I don’t think Psych is a useless major, although I did not major in it or even take any classes in the subject…

My H majored in psych and became a lawyer. I see how his psych background helps him in negotiating real estate deals, dealing with clients and the like. I’m also a lawyer and I’ve developed those skills over the years, but I see how he had them much earlier and more easily than me.

Psych is good for business because it will help you to understand and deal with the actions and motivations of others. It’s great for careers in HR or personnel.

I sort of wish I had taken some psych classes but I loved my pol sci major and history and journalism minors.

i wouldn’t say that the major is useless, but the people who ive met who are majoring in psych give it a bad rep. not the brightest people around…
i feel bad for all the psych majors that actually give a damn that have to be compared to those who have no business going to college

I think that depends on the student and the school along with their goals, but I see what you mean even in other majors. Usually the students you mention don’t have any real goals and don’t do anything with the major later on.

A psychology degree is “worthless” if you expect to graduate and find a regular business job with it. There really aren’t that many psychology jobs, so when you want a job you’ll be looking for other jobs like in offices and stuff. They might look at your psychology degree and think you’re not qualified for the kind of basic tasks you normally do in regular offices. If you want to work after you graduate with a psychology degree, you’ll probably have to go to grad school.
