Social Activity

One of the things holding me back from accepting jhu's offer of admission is that i've heard a lot about how because the course load is so hard at hopkins there isnt much of a social life on campus. does anyone know the extent as to how true this is?

not at all

Hopkins is a demanding place. You will be challenging to the max when you step into this university. Hopkins is meant to be a catalyst for those are deemed worthy to develop and blossom into something out of their wildest dream.

Yeah, Hopkins has a reputation to be hard. Its actually not that hard, I mean, if you got in, you must be smart to handle the workload.

But Phead, would about the social scene?

How is it there? One of my friends who's currently a sophomore there has told me that it's normal to see kids staying in on a friday night to do homework...and that the word "fun & social" is not attributed to JHU...

I mean, it's not a huge deal, because we are going to JHU for the quality of its education as well as the school, but i would like to know beforehand, how or if there is a social scene...

you can get wasted every night of the week or you can stay in and do homework, the choice is up to you, what i'm trying to say here is your college experience is what you make of it and yes there is a social scene

i agree. i am a sophomore here and my social life is exactly how i make it out to be. some nights ill go hardcore into studying and other nights ill chill and do whatnot. play hard work hard. you shouldnt have to be worried about this. if youre interested, visit for a night with a host. i just finished with a group of prefreshies with one of my clubs and i think a majority of them had a great time and agree that this wasnt anything like they expected.

Yeah, some of the wrestling guys took in some wrestling recruit prefrosh and they had a blast. There will usually be frat parties fridays and saturdays, SigEp (Sigma Phi Epsilon) has a beer game night thursdays, and of course from Mondays-Thursdays it's fairly easy to get into a bar/club known as The Den which is right above Tamber's (an Indian/American diner adjacent to Wolman hall). Sundays you might be able to get into the Den (JUST SHOW THEM YOUR JCARD, and that will usually get you in) and have fun.

As previous posters have said, you can be as social as you want to be. You can get involved in Greek life, or go barhopping around Baltimore and DC (if you have a fake id, which is obviously illegal but something you can engage in at your own discretion), or study all the time or engage in non-alcoholic entertainment.
