Social Concerns?

Very excited about my acceptance! Does anyone have any concerns about the CMU social life? Just reading some posts/blogs. There doesn’t seem to be much interest in fun or sports.

This is like, totally false. Come to the facebook group and we will show you the truth.

Thanks Vulkan, I will. Anyone else want to comment? Can anyone comment on sports participation?

Just wanted to mention that a lot of people participate in sports. There’s IM for those who don’t want much committment, but we still have quite a few varsity D3 teams  Was there a sport in particular you were interested in?

It’s a college, and like EVERY OTHER COLLEGE IN THE WORLD (minus probably a couple), it will have some people who are very academically focused (significantly more so than at some other schools), some who are passionate about about athletics, others who like to party, and every other type of person you could imagine. I wouldn’t worry at all about finding your own niche.

Honestly, yeah, there isn’t much of a social scene, but I have made very close friends here. With the workload and course rigor, there isn’t much time. But getting to know people who are passionate about things just as much as you are is so great which is what sets CMU apart from other schools. You’ll definitely find a vibrant social life here!

You will not have a social life like students at state schools. It is just not that crazy. I can confirm is there low interest in “watching sports”. Students rarely if ever attend sporting events. Plenty of students are active and play sports such as IM, club sports like ultimate frisbee.

It’s not that people aren’t interested in fun, time is just scarce. To put it in perspective, after graduating, I find my fulltime job (50 hours a week) a cakewalk compared to college.

There is a lot of diversity in what fun is on campus. On Mondays there are magic the gathering drafts in the university center. There are movies shown on campus in the auditorium as well as live music acts that come to play on campus. And then there’s also your traditional college parties with beer pong. Things for everyone!
