Social Scene

How’s the social scene here? Other than having 40% greek, is there a lot to do?

Vandy’s social scene is pretty fantastic. On campus, there’s plenty to do whether or not Greek life is your thing. Clubs constantly have events and shows, and there are several student organizations (like VPB) that regularly put on big free or very cheap events. Personally, I’m not into the Greek scene, and I still find myself having to choose between things to do on the weekends because there’s so much. Of course, in the fall there’s football (if that’s your thing) and year round there’s Nashville, which in and of itself provides a lot (music and much, much more) to do. Even if you’re not Greek, you’re never going to be bored at Vandy.

There are a plethora of options:

-Theatrical Performances
-Movies in Sarratt
-Free concerts
-Sporting events
-Casino Night, Video Game Night, etc.
-LAN Parties
-Comedy shows
-Trivia Night at the Pub

Just to name a few.

Vanderbilt does a great job bringing in lots of great bands on campus - I saw Modest Mouse, Flaming Lips, Kanye West, and lots of other great acts. On top of that you have D-1 sports (football tailgates/exciting basketball games/#1 baseball team in country). Tons of clubs on campus, and a great city right at your footsteps with lots of great restaurants.

Most of my friends, including those in Greek life, spend a lot of their time with clubs and organizations. Greek life is something somewhat exclusive to do on some nights and weekends, but there’s a thriving social scene that everyone is a part of during the rest of the time, Greek or non-Greek.

@Pancaked so if you are a guy who is not involved in greek life, is it tough to get into parties or does it vary based on the weekend?

To get into Greek parties after rush has ended, you tend to need to know the brothers or be ushered in with a group of girls. That’s not always the case. Early in the night, before the parties fill up, it’s much easier to get in. I’ve only experienced one fraternity so I can’t be entirely sure how it works everywhere.

There are plenty of other things to do if you don’t go to a Greek party – again, the majority of the campus is non-Greek.

@Pancaked The notorious question “Who do you know here?” :stuck_out_tongue:

Funny little anecdote:

I was not Greek but rarely was asked if I knew anyone in the house upon attempting to enter a party. One of my roommates was asked 99% of the time and he would always just say “I’m with him.” and point to me. No further questions asked.

In my experience the Greek’s at Vandy are way friendlier to outsiders than at other schools. That may have changed since I attended though.

I’ve been to other schools where fraternities charge an admission fee for guys to get into their parties… If anyone tried that here, they would be laughed off campus!
