Since I will soon be attending Vanderbilt in the fall, I was just curious as to how Vanderbilt's social scene is. Is it very diverse in terms of the cultural backgrounds of the students? Are most students just preppy rich kids?

Somebody ought to play a drinking game with this question–every time it shows up…gulp lol

I’m also going to be a freshman at Vandy, so I have no first hand experience. From what I’ve heard (over and over and over again), the answer to your first question is “yes, pretty–not as much as some other big schools, maybe, but pretty diverse,” and the answer to your second is “no.”

: ) I’m diverse as far as cultural background goes, and I’m neither rich nor preppy (I went to probably the ghetto-ist high school outside of a major US city haha) so maybe that’ll make you feel better?

Hope to see you at Vandy in the fall! (please don’t take offense at my first comment. I’m not complaining about you, I just thought it would be funny haha)

Vandy is a historically very wealthy southern school, but it’s making an effort to change its reputation. It pretty much has the standard university spread of folks. Yeah, you’ll see frat boys and sorority girls, but then there’ll be the science geeks and acoustic music types, and everybody in between. Don’t let the preppy reputation scare you off!
see you in August! : )

I believe 60% of the people do not qualify for need-based aid. Therefore, most people have a highly advantaged socio-economic background.
