Social security number and fafsa

I came to the US through the F1 program, but then I was adopted and moved from Texas to Indiana. I need to stay in indiana for 2 yrs to have a green card. Before that i can’t apply for SSN. Therefore i can’t fill out my fafsa. I wonder if I can apply for public universities or not and what kind of scholarship and financial aid I can get

What type of visa are you here under? Did a citizen adopt you? You probably won’t qualify for federal aid without a SSN, green card, or permanent status. https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/eligibility/non-us-citizens#can-i-get-aid You might qualify for state aid, but it depends on the state and the amount of time you’ve lived there.

You can apply for a public school, but that doesn’t mean you’ll get aid. You might get instate tuition if you’ve lived there long enough.

You are NOT an eligible noncitizen and cannot receive federal student aid if:

  1. you are in the U.S. on an F-1 or F-2 nonimmigrant student visa, or on a J-1 or J-2 nonimmigrant Exchange Visitor Visa,

When were you adopted? By US citizens?

After doing a little googling, it appears that your adoption doesn’t change your immigration status (if you were over 16 when adopted). Your student status (F1) stays the same, so you’d be ineligible for federal aid and unable to file a fafsa.

You need to meet with the admissions and financial aid teams at the colleges and universities that you are considering in Indiana. They will be able to tell you what aid is available for students in your situation.

How old are you?

How old were you when you were adopted?

Where did you graduate from high school…or are you still IN high school?

How about attending a community college in your state until you can get a green card?

Or attend a school that gives you a substantial merit scholarship.

How much will your family pay each year towards college?
