Social skills camp or summer program?

Has anyone’s child attended a summer program or camp that focuses on social skills or executive functioning skills? I think some boarding schools may offer them. Thinking about something like this to help prep for boarding school. Thanks for suggestions!

Our school does a week long program that is open to all incoming students, and most do it. You may want to see what your school offers.

It is nice when it’s done this way because there’s no stigma in attending and it’s geared specifically to your school (i.e., “what’s a consultation and how do I get one?”) and it also lets kids start school with friends. The upperclassmen who help with the program remain mentors for the first year.

That’s funny @gardenstategal , I didn’t know that week long summer program was for all students. I thought we got that invitation based on the fact that his SSAT scores were only mediocre!

At Mercersburg, there is an almost-week-long orientation period for students every year. New students arrive on a Monday and start the orientation, returning students arrive midday the next day. From what my son told me, it’s a week of community building activities, and getting to know the resources and routines on campus. PGAs also start in the afternoons that week. Convocation is Sunday evening and then classes start on Monday. I thought it was an excellent way to start the school year!

If your school offers a summer or pre-registration program, that would be great. Many BSs have summer programs, which would be a good opportunity to experience being away in a BS setting (I know I get mail from Loomis and I believe Choate). Salisbury does a co-ed summer school that I think covers substantive academic subjects but I believe may also involve study and other organizational skills. (Info should be on the web site soon.) They also do a lot of outdoor stuff and day trips. Congrats and good luck!

@CTMom21 is right - Salisbury has several summer learning opportunities that are co-ed. Check out the Putney summer program. If you need a program with the opportunity to develop social skills, check out the Landmark summer high school program - there is a Social Pragmatics track. There is a nice article in last months CHADD magazine (Attention) about summer camps. You can also check out programs via summerschoolreview (dot com).
