Hi!! So I originally applied to my university to be a psychology major. I’ve been thinking a lot and I would like to major in social work and minor in psychology. All I have to do is call and they can change it on my application. I know that I want to help people in my career, but I’m afraid social work won’t be for me. For starters, I am an introvert. I feel like I will need to be good at communicating with others, when most of the time I prefer to just listen. I have also heard that it can be emotionally draining. And yes there is low pay but that doesn’t matter to me, as long as I love what I’m doing and have a roof over my head I’m fine. Could anyone with social work experience tell me what it’s like as a freshman going into this major and any experiences along the way? Thanks
You can be an introvert and be good at communicating with others. Often in careers like social work, the important thing IS listening - you have to understand people’s problems in order to help them, and sometimes what you really need to do is listen and take in what someone is telling you and respond by helping them access services or give them care. Clinical social workers spend a LOT of time listening to other people and supporting them.
Have you ever volunteered for a social services organization? Try doing that, maybe over the summer. See if you can shadow a social worker or at least set up some informational interviews with a few to talk to them about their work and what they do. That may give you a window into whether you would enjoy that type of work or not.
It can be emotionally draining, but there are lots of jobs that can be that way.
