Hi everyone. I graduated with a BA in psychology and am considering grad schools. I only have one in mind that I've always wanted to go to, NYU. Someone suggested I apply to the social work master's program at NYU rather than the psych master's program, because you finish fast, take the exam to get your license and start your own clinic (if wanted) and then pursue PhD or PsyD in psychology. She had me convinced pretty quickly and it is a better option because one of the requirements into the psych program is the GRE exam which might take me back even more (I missed the application deadline this year so now I'm stuck). My question is what exactly is the difference between social work and psychology? Because from all the reading and questioning of people I'm probably more confused than ever now. Will I be able to work as a therapist with an MSW and work towards a doctorate in psychology? Or would I have to stick to social work only? (Not exactly my choice; I've always leaned more towards clinical/counseling psychology). I want to do therapy work and counseling. Not really interested in research or dissertations or teaching and all that, which leads me to another question: What's the difference between a PhD in psychology and a PsyD? Is a dissertation required? Is a master's thesis required? If I get an MSW and then my LCSW will I be able to get a job as a therapist/psychological counselor?

I really need some advice/guidance, help. It will be greatly appreciated!! (It's making me nervous not knowing 100% what's what and I need to do...I like to plan and have everything planned). And one last thing: NYU is my one and only choice, so I might need a plan B in case. Any suggestions as to what other grad schools in NY have programs that I need/want, preferably top-notch schools, aka best in the business :)...Thank you so much in advance!
