If someone was to put something really ridiculous as an extracirricular on their app, like leading the the local chapter of a white power group or an internship at NAMBLA, how would the adcom react to that? Trash it or mark it down as "diversity"?

What kind of question is that?

A hypothetical one.

I would say societal norms would prevail.

KKK reps on campus are a sought after contribution to student body diversity. Expect many foto-ops in traditional Klanwear (Klothes, as they say in Super-Secret Impenetrable Klan Klode), probably doing the bunny ears pose behind the smiling faces of Asians, Blacks, Latinos, Indians, Natives and Arabs huddled together around you, together forming a serene scene of rascal comeraderie caught in a perfect moment of racial harmony and religious, ethnic, cultural and ideological diversity.

Striving for diversity goes only so far. Common sense would suggest that any ECs that are repugnant, odious, or illegal would hurt your application chances.

A prominent white nationalist forum has a Harvard undergrad who's an active poster.

Don't listen to the poster above me. Intolerant repugnance is the new URM!

I mean the poster above the poster above me.

And please, don't listen to me. This is not the kind of question you'd even need to be asking. College will throw you into an amazing, intimate face-to-face with people from utterly different worlds; if it looks as if you can't handle that kind of contact in a positive and even constructive, mutually beneficial way, then no - it probably is not a good idea to put it down.

Just out of curiosity, why the question?

Who knows how people react to anything? Adcoms are people too. They have their dislikes, prejudices, beliefs, and convictions.

I wouldn't try doing anything radical.

my main EC is smoking marijuana with my friends and growing the best strands possible

i was told not to tell adcoms though which somewhat disappoints me because this is truly my passion.

@bennyblanco:
If only society were more accepting, that'd be a great EC! (Cannabis Cup winner!)

I am definitely not asking the question because it applies to me...I'm the most liberal, anti-racist, feminist (for a male) person I know. (and an anarchist as well!) I just thought it would be funny looking through all the ludicrous EC lists people post in the chances thread with a million awards, independent research published in peer-reviewed journals, starting multi-national charities, etc. if there was a "founder of local kkk chapter" stuck inconspicuously between "president of local community advisory board" and "treasurer of student council". How would you react to that if you were the adcom and the candidate was perfect in every other way?

What a dumb question. NAMBLA is the most terrible group ever. For those of you who don't know, it is the north american man boy love association. Basically it is a bunch of homosexual pedafiles claiming that walt whitman loved to have sex with little boys, so it must be ok. Thank God the press doesn't even give this perverted group the time of day.

Your definition of socially unacceptable is my definition of sick!

that NAMBLA thing is pretty disturbing... is it advocating pedophilia between men/boys or pedophilia in general (either way, it is still very, very, disturbing)...

Why wouldn't they want a member of the North American Marlon Brando Look Alikes?

:p

NAMBLA is a group of gross, perverted freaks who all get locked away sooner or later but an active member of the kkk shouldn't be frowned upon if anyone involved in the naacp puts that on their ec list and gets in. The naacp is just as racist as the modern day klan but somehow black people being racist is socially acceptable due to political correctnecc (F*** P.C.)

Uh...I'm pretty sure comparing the kkk to naacp is totally unjustified.

um, last time i checked, the NAACP didn't burn crosses and threaten physical harm to those who don't believe in their cause...

I think it would give the adcoms a good laugh as they tacked the application onto their "Rejection Wall of Shame"
