Some Advice Regarding Math

Hi, this is my first post at CC, so please forgive my ignorance/anything thing I might have done wrong.

Okay, so, I'm a sophomore and I already took Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. I am currently taking Pre-calculus, and I currently have a 79 as a semester average. (I got an 85 the semester before).

My school only requires us to take 4 years of math, so I technically don't have to take Calculus AB AP. But I heard it was much easier than Pre-calculus itself and my counselor recommended that I should take it (but he probably didn't see my averages before saying this).

I'm aspiring to go to a high-tier liberal arts school like Pomona, Amherst, or Swarthmore.

My question: Should I take Calculus AB AP next year (junior year)?

no, take BC

^Says the math junkie.

i’d take calc AB, especially if pre-calc at your school prepares you well and it’s easier. :] did you double up on math classes freshman year, or why do you have 3 high school math credits?

To be honest, I have no idea what LACs want course-wise. I think you’d be better off taking Calc AB than not taking any math most certainly, but if you’re into the humanities, and the LACs will give credit for Stats, I don’t know if Calc is a better option than that.

If you’re looking at AB vs. no math, definitely take AB. But maybe look at other options too.

Do AB over the summer, BC during the school year.

That way, you’ll have a decent bit of prep.

Tres Elefantes-- I took a credit by exam for geometry over the summer since I didn’t want to spend the whole year working out proofs and drawing with compasses (Me doing this in a testing situtation = ultimate fail since I can’t even quickly draw a straight line with a ruler–the CBE exam was a total joke and only had multiple choice questions.)

QwertyKey-- I am into humanities, but unfortunately I have to get through Calc if I want to take Stats.

Okay, so I heard Calc BC is easier than Precal. (I have a friend taking Calc BC right now and she was in the same Precal class last year) Is this true?

calc AB is for girls

be a man and take BC

You have to take AB before Stats? Weird…

But top LACs don’t have requirements much more lax than top universities. You should be taking math beyond precal.

Calc AB or BC easier than Precalc? I doubt it.

If you are able to do AB to get to Stats, then do AB (especially since you are a humanities person, who cares about the BC)

Takes AP Statistics. You look like a highly intelligent padawan, but you need to achieve within your capabilities.

md5hash-- Funny, I AM a girl. LOL.

nwgolfer321-- I think it’s mostly because the precal teacher in our school is VERY bad. She rarely shows up for class and whenever she’s actually there, she cracks jokes and hardly teaches.

Everyone-- Thanks for all of the advice. I have decided to take Calc AB AP next year.

SuiGeneris09 and TresElefantes-- Is Statistics AP easier than Calc for less math-oriented people? Because that’s what it seems like your saying…

i think that’s a great idea!

If your stats class is calc-based, I imagine it’ll be aimed more for people who took BC. If you’re school is just being weird in requiring an algebra-based stats after calc, then… I don’t know what to say. That’s stupid.

Anyway, unless your BS class is super easy and the Pre-Calc class was super hard, now, BC is harder than Pre-Calc.
