some concerns from an incoming freshman

hey guys,
I’m an incoming freshman for next year. i just had a few concerns about georgia tech as i was doing research. I’ve read countless reviews that say that it’s extremely difficult to balance a social life with schoolwork at Tech. Is it really as bad as people say? I work extremely hard in school but having an active social life is important to me and I’m nervous that I will not be able to do both effectively

In short, no, it is not that hard. Keep in mind that online reviews often feature an abundance of feedback from disgruntled individuals and do not always represent reality. Students who come from high school never having had to really study or work hard do sometimes have difficulty transitioning to a school where they can no longer skate by. Some of these students then blame their subsequent lack of success on the school rather than taking a look in the mirror. But most students do not find it to be that hard to balance a healthy social life with a commitment to academics. If you developed good time management and study skills in high school, which it sounds like you have, you will be fine. If you don’t have great study habits or find that you’re getting stuck, Tech has abundant tutoring resources to help freshman successfully transition to college. Just do your assignments and seek help if you need it and you’ll do fine.

@apgreenberg – GaTech has some of the best outdoor programs, swimming pool, intramural sports, religious groups, and many fraternities and sororities, as well as lots of spectator sports. There are some students who may study the majority of the time, but plenty of others are having a full college life! There are fun techy contests too, marathon programming contests, for 48 hours on campus, that is attracting the top programmers, but you can get onto a team and learn from your classmates. The beauty of GaTech is it will take you from where you are and improve your math, and reasoning skills. You can do this and have fun. Plan carefully and check your AP credits. Its probably advisable to take some AP credits if you feel you learned the material. Talk to current students during FASAT to learn more about the level of math you should sign up for. You can repeat math if you feel weak in calculus. Relax and have fun, college is the best time of your life!!
