Some general questions about UVA

I haven't visited yet, but I'm trying to go this summer.

1.) Campus security is REALLY important to me, one of the main reasons that UVA is my top choice over VTech (I just can't get over the lack of good security there). Do you, current students, feel safe at UVA?

2.) How's the food (I mean I will be living there! lol) Is it easy to get a seat there at any time of the day?

3.) Are the gyms good?

4.) Are the clubs/activities diverse?

5.) Is the Student Body diverse?

6.) Is it terribly hard to maintain a GPA of 3.8 or above?

7.) Are the dorms nice (Like bathrooms and stuff)?

8.) Do you HAVE to have a car or is everything within walking distance?

9.) Are there many research opportunities?

10.) Is there a nearby hospital where I can volunteer?

11.) Are the professors open to tutoring during office hours?

And most importantly:

12.) Are you happy there?

Thanks in advance, you responses will REALLY help because I have NO idea where I want to go!!!

1.) Campus security: ummm I don’t know what you think about Tech but it wasn’t a security problem, the same thing could have happened at any college (I’m assuming you mean the shootings a few Aprils ago). Don’t walk around past midnight and expect to be safe, this is a town with a 25% poverty rate and muggings happen (not frequently but not infrequently, typically after midnight in sketchy areas after people are tipsy) among other crimes. But it’s not, like, Philadelphia or Richmond or anything.

2.) food / crowded: Food is okay (better at first year dorms than other dining halls). Crowded between 12pm and 1:30pm typically.

3.) Are the gyms good? I don’t go but a lot of my friends do and I don’t hear complaints.

4.) Are the clubs/activities diverse? There are over 500 clubs so yes.

5.) Is the Student Body diverse? The eschool is pretty diverse, a lot of international students. The school body is more diverse than Virginia itself (which some argue about) but I wouldn’t call it DIVERSE diverse (still majority white).

6.) Is it terribly hard to maintain a GPA of 3.8 or above? Yes. There’s a reason it is prestigious to get Phi Beta Kappa. This school is made up of valedictorians and 4.0+ GPAs from high school, the average GPA is 3.2 here. Not everyone gets A’s, that’s real world. There’s still a lot of inflation though, as you can tell by average GPA being 3.2.

7.) Are the dorms nice (Like bathrooms and stuff)? They’re functioning. They’re not abominable but they’re not ritzy hotel nice. This is college not a luxury spa stay.

8.) Do you HAVE to have a car or is everything within walking distance? You’re not allowed to have a car your first year.

9.) Are there many research opportunities? Yes.

10.) Is there a nearby hospital where I can volunteer? Yes, UVA hospital where our med school is. So glad you searched out info on that one.

11.) Are the professors open to tutoring during office hours? They have office hours but they’re not going to tutor you. You’d have to get a private tutor or go to big open sessions with TAs (depends on department).

12.) Are you happy there? I love it here!!! It’s just not a Ritz Carlton, it’s a state school, come on now, you need some more reasonable expectations than those you seem to be wanting from a state school (or any college).

Because I am only a prospective Uva transfer I can’t answer most of these questions but as a former VT student, I can say that security at VT is probably tighter now than 99.9% of the colleges in the U.S. Just to piggyback what hazelorb said, that unfortunate situation could happen anywhere and it’s unfortunate that people still have the misconception that there is a “lack of security.” If you have legitimate security concerns, you should steer clear of VCU in Richmond, my friends told me a murder happened right across the street of their apartment a few weeks ago. While I don’t totally know, I would assume UVa has decent security (I have many friends that go there and haven’t heard any complaints). At most colleges the question of security comes down to the environment of course, but also your individual habits as well (e.g. if you drink heavily you are probably more prone to situations where safety concerns can come into play).

The gyms are AWESOME
