Some questions about Engineering

How likely it is to have a job related to banking in an NY with a major in engineering science and minor in economics? (I am currently in the college of engineering)

Is double major (one of them is engineering science) manageable at Vandy?

How is the job recruitment for top banking firms at Vandy?

Can I have some credits at Vandy when I have no APs or IBs? Our country's curriculum is different but I think it is more challenging than APs? What about SAT II? Can I gain some credits through SAT II?

A double major should be doable.

Sat II probably will not get you any credits. You can try to get some credit for your country’s curriculum through the registrar’s office, but I don’t know anyone who has gotten credit for anything other than AP classes, or university courses taken while in high school.

I don’t know anything about the pipeline to banking firms, sorry.

The engineering school has engineering management as a minor, or concentration in engineering science - I believe. The econ department in A&S is good. If you’re in Engineering Science, you shouldn’t have any trouble double majoring and finishing in 2 years. A VERY large number of American CEO’s have undergraduate degrees in engineering, then went on to get MBA’s. Being able to understand and work with engineering processes means you can think - that’s also needed in business. I think it’s a strong combination and better than a standard undergraduate business degree, which Vanderbilt did away with years ago.

How is job recruitment for Engineering Science? Are Eng Sci students inferior to students of other majors in the competition for jobs? Do companies prefer people who specialize in one particular field (Chem/Electrical/Mech…) to those who have a broad view of engineering?

@Swimmer: you said “If you’re in Engineering Science, you shouldn’t have any trouble double majoring and finishing in 2 years.” What do you mean by saying “2 years”? 2 years for each major or both?
Is it possible to double major and then have a minor? Anw, this may deflate my GPA, I think :(?

^oops. I meant 4 years. Engineering Science isn’t as time-consuming as something like Mechanical or Chemical engineering. It doesn’t have the numerous labs, numerous problem sets, and high-level classes like thermodynamics and the like. It’s got a good, basic engineering education, but you can do concentrations in different areas. See the website. I would think that you could do a double major with Engineering Science if you plan well - making sure that requirements for both are fulfilled. Advisors can help - they are great. Might be a good time to use any/all AP hours you have.

When my son was there, his friends in engineering science weren’t as busy as other engineers. It was common to double major in engineering science and human and organizational development in the Peabody school. I would think an engineering management minor would make that combination strong. My son minored in engineering management and majored in Mechanical engineering. He had 3 good, strong job offers.

So it is possible to double major (engineering science and econ) and then another minor(engineering management) ? 0-O

You can do the engineering management concentration in engineering science and double-major in econ. that is a common plan, but you have to outline classes/AP credit carefully. use the advisor! good luck.

Companies love to see engineering degrees and not just for your typical engineering jobs.
