someone must petition the internet cap

Quick point--most Cornell students only have to deal with it for a year or two and then they don't live in dorms anymore. So, for example, the cap doesn't bother me at all. :D

once you're off campus, there's no resnet though, so no DC++ hub. it all evens out.

The 5 GB cap is really not a big deal. As you can see, the only kids complaining about it are the prefrosh and current students are fine with it. It's certainly more than enough for normal usage and DC++ will enable you to get plenty of the mp3's/avi movies without adding to your usage. OMG sorry Cornell won't fund your illegal DVD dl's...stop complaining and go rent or buy it. Case closed.

An example of a DVD image you might want for some reason, but you probably couldn't get on DC++: yesterday micro$oft released a free beta of their new windows vista operating system, available as a dvd image download. I say that it probably isn't available on DC++ because I think they require that you get a unique key for each download. That alone could put you over the limit, and it is a fairly legitimate thing to be downloading.

My freshman year there was no cap on internet usage. We each had to pay $44 per month to have internet in our dorms. That is per person, not per room. So this new plan is actually saving you money by having very heavy users that suck up all the bandwidth pay extra for everyone else's inconvenience.

shoofy, i think one could put up with downloading wirelessly in a library every few years when microsoft releases a new operating system.

Oh yeah, did anybody mention that wireless internet doesn't count toward the cap?

sparticus- that was just an example. And it would take about a day to download that big a file. I wouldn't want to leave my computer in the library unattended. I assume the wireless works in some dorms, so that might work, but am I correct in saying that it isn't reliable all over campus?

public wireless that is. i set up a wireless router and that counts (anybody who mooches off your router is having their bandwidth charged to you too, so make sure to secure your wireless networks.

however, wireless in lounges and libraries is "free."

I have a question...
Is there any restrictions when using the unlimited bandwidth within Cornell? Like are there websites blocked? Can you use Limewire?

In my HS they have free wireless for us to use but block out certain things (porn, myspace, p2p etc.) Is it the same there, cuz that would suck?

nothing is blocked, unless perhaps it's explicitly illegal or a big security risk, but I haven't run into any of that. you're a college student, you can make your own choices, like if you want to look at porn or use myspace haha.

However, porn, myspace, and p2p other than DC++ are not within cornell.

The free wireless in the libraries, lounges and buildings is the same: virtually no restrictions.

wait, im confused
all that is NOT within Cornell? What does that mean?
Cornell doesn't have internet access? Myspace is just a website...
Aren't the libraries lounges etc considered within Cornell?

srry if im sounding stupid

it means the websites aren't on cornell servers. You can access anything within Cornell's private network without it counting against your bandwidth limit, but anything on the public internet does count.

what the heck is dc++?

a p2p program with a hub at cornell for only intra-network traffic (no bandwidth charge)

are you %##@%@ serious?
wow, when i thought they said "inside cornell" i thought it meant like a range

that really sucks... im like a 24/7 internet guy...

but i understand y they do this though
i remember this story about this kid at MIT not getting caught until he transferred a terabyte of porn lol

Lol... a terabyte of porn? You'd have to watch it 24/7 for like a whole year to work your way through all of that.

i hope all of my 40K+ tution goes towards providing annoying little sociopaths with more porn.
