For DD’s college senior recital we skyped in Grandma who could not travel. They were both delighted because she could see Grandma in the front row! Be sure to have a friend in charge of the skype though since there will be enough other things to worry about. Oh, and be sure to tell them ahead of time if there is an internmission so you do not lose them for the second half.

D3 did a live feed for people who couldn’t be there for her senior recital, and between that and our family videos, we were able to include grandparents and distant siblings (who recorded themselves watching and cheering!). Senior HS recitals are a wonderful opportunity to showcase all they have achieved as they head off to college.

@Singersmom07- It was from you that I got the idea about using Skype for my D’s junior recital (in college), and Iif I have forgotten to thank you up to this point, please let me do so now! One of D’s best friends- who had been a great mentor- was in a YAP in another city and had performance commitments herself, so setting up the laptop enabled her to be right “there”.
For those planning on trying this, remember to bring extension cords and scope out the venue beforehand if at all possible. I set up in the back of the hall, because that enabled the best view since D was on a stage with the grand piano and the sound quality was better.
Also, MUTE the sound on the receiving end- you don’t want to get to a quiet moment in the program and hear someone asking for “some more pizza”!!

Have fun everyone!

hahaha…speaking of senior recitals my DH and I went to the senior (in college) recital of one of my son’s friends/classmates. He is a very talented VP major who is going on to the Monk Institute. His parents are both professional musicians in LA. At the end they got up and joined him and sang “Lean on Me” with him. It was fantastic and very moving. His mother who is a professional singer filled the room with her sound and her performance. So now I keep joking that I am going to take singing lessons and as a special treat hope to get up and do a duet with my son. Let me just say HE IS NOT AMUSED. I think my singing abilities rival Hilary Clintons. I can barely hum one note without my son shouting STOP!!!

I have two years. Sadly I don’t think that is nearly enough time.

Enjoy….

My son’s senior percussion recital was this past Saturday evening. I really had no idea how many people would show up as we sent invitations to close family and friends but S also created online events on FB and twitter to invite all of his school friends. It was held in the school auditorium which seats like 700 people so we weren’t concerned about space.

He had a nice turnout - probably somewhere from 70 to 90 people. A lot of friends from band and school as well as some of his friends’ parents, family friends, a few of my coworkers, and several of his teachers attended. His lesson teacher is pretty young so S is his first student that’s going on to pursue music. He was so helpful throughout the process and he and S planned the recital. He takes a lot of pride in S’s accomplishments and invited some of his musician friends to the recital which meant a lot to S.

S played six pieces with the final one being a duo with his lesson teacher. We served cookies and lemonade afterwards and then a smaller group of us (family and closest friends) went out to dinner. It was truly a great evening. Like someone else said, S will attend school halfway across the country and so it was the only opportunity for most of his friends and family to see him perform.

That sounds like a wonderful nite!

Congrats @wcbandmom - a wonderful milestone a great night to remember! My son just graduated with his BM in percussion and was halfway across the country from us for four years- so hard to have to miss a lot of his performances, but now he’ll be closer for Grad school and I will definitely be there for concerts a lot more:) Best wishes to your son!

@mymble Thanks! That’s great that your son will be moving closer to home! That’s what I’m hoping for.

The recital was last night and it went off without a hitch. Wonderful turnout and we were able to Skype for those who couldn’t make it. We served sandwiches and salads and cupcakes. I took the tea and lemonade suggestion as well. Thank you all for sharing your experiences.

@Dradsmom- So glad that everything went smoothly and that you and your D had a wonderful evening!

@Dradsmom ~ sounds like a wonderful evening! I’m glad it went well. What a great memory for you all.
