Son has scheduling dilemma with sports

My son has been in a state of turmoil since finding out that if he wants to play for the tennis team he has to keep his schedule open from 2pm to 5pm everyday! Well being a freshman, he took whatever classes were open on his given registration day. He has both Chem 6A and math 20A during those times. Between lectures and discussions its seeming impossible to find any open classes without huge waiting lists. He is concerned that if he were to give up his classes that he is in now and doesn't get in on a waiting list than he will be down 2 classes. Not to mention setting him back for next quarter! How likely is it that classes will open within the first couple of weeks ? Should he talk to the chem and math department and tell them his dilemma or will they not care that he is trying to work things out so he can play for the school? Personally as a mother I wouldn't be too dissapointed if he doesn't play as it seems like they miss a lot of class time traveling to other schools and am worried about him falling behind on his studies. Any advice from people who have been down this road is greatly appreciated!!

well thats a bummer...but that seems impossible to have those times open but i heard some ppl can do it...if i was ur son..i wouldnt drop any of the classes especially the chem one if he has professor johnson...he can try out for intramural tennis...

UCSD Recreation Intramurals

It is very possible to keep a time like that open. Once/If he makes the tennis team he will get priority registration for all quarters after that (assuming he remains on the team).

tennis does take a TON of time out of school though..early 8am weights, 10am training, 2-5 practice, weekend tournys, some comm. service stuff and school pride events..winter quarter is probably the most intense, i dated a tennis player last year and it was really hard..but if your son loves tennis, the guys tennis team is a real great way to make good friends and be a part of the school and community..most of those guys are awesome and they are really close..they also have tutoring/study hall type times too so people can still be serious with their studies

chem 6A and math 20A is easier during the summer anyways.

got to make a sacrifice somewhere

But if he waits till summer to take Chem 6A then he cant take 6B the following quiarter right?? Wouldn't that put him way behind if he waits to take these 2 critical classes?

^ not necessarily.

there are many different types of requirements ranging from major, ucsd, and school college requirements. he could probably excel in one of these areas while being stagnant in another area. doing it like this he would still be moving forward.

oh and a funny thing about summer is that he could take chem 6A during summer session I and then chem 6b during summer session II if they are offered like that.

he can take chem 6a next quarter, then 6b spring, then 6c over summer if he wanted to so he could be taking ochem fall of next year..chem and math arent the kind of classes that are only offered once a year, and you can take two classes a summer session

im sure there are some ge requirements he can take this first quarter to get over with
