I posted this in another thread but got no response. I'd really like to hear some opinions on this. Any input would be appreciated!

My D has a song from Nine in her repertoire that she does very well & has planned to use in her college auditions. I am afraid with the movie and soundtrack coming out, this may put it on the "do not use" list. She disagrees, but I'm not so sure. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

If it is “Unusual Way” I don’t think she should do it anyway because it is overdone. Maury Yeston can be hard for auditions anyway because he tends to write musical scenes versus songs and that doesnt always work in an audition.

KABee – it’s pretty difficult to recommend any songs unless we know more about your daughter’s type and vocal range. There are thousands of songs to choose from! However, as a vocal coach, I often suggest that students familiarize themselves with some of the earlier Bway composers, like Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Irvin Berlin. Some of their songs tend to be less overdone and are a welcome change for audition panels.

Thanks. You are all very helpful. We went through all her songs last night and pulled out several that we think will work. She really loves performing some of the songs by the composers you mentioned. I think it’s a good idea as well. I was not crazy about Unusual Way. I think because she had worked on it recently, she was kind of “stuck on it”. After she reviewed the songs in her repertoire, I think she realized she could make much better choices. As a Mom, sometimes it’s good to have second and third opinions to back you up! :-)
