Songs from films for college auditions?

I've been preparing this song from the film "Blame It on Rio." The song is by Cy Coleman and is a total theatrical-style piece. Is this appropriate to use for auditions? If I've created the situation and relationship necessary just like I would for most musical theatre songs, does it matter that it's not from a musical? It's by an MT composer.

I’ll mention that my daughter’s pre-1960 song for schools that required such a song, also was by a well known MT composer but the particular song was written for a movie (like your example) and she got into some competitive programs using that song. Generally, I think songs should be from musicals in theater, but given that the composer is a well known MT composer, I think the song you mention should be OK. (I don’t know that song, I should clarify, but going by the circumstances you provided)

It doesn’t matter what the song is. As long as you can sincerely show yourself through your song while also showing your talent.

I used a Rodgers and Hammerstein and a piece that was just written independantly but in the style of music theatre, and it went excellently for me.

The biggest thing to remember is you want to show off your personality. I chose Ball State because after my acceptance I had an interview with Bill Jenkins, the head of the department, and he told me “Talent comes at a dime a dozen these days, but we look for good people who we can help nurture and grow.” There will always be someone better, but the personality is what gets you in. Best of luck!
