Sotomayor, if confirmed, will be the 11th Supreme Court Justice who received an undergraduate degree from Princeton and the University will, along with Stanford, be represented by two sitting justices at the same time. Justice Alito '72, is the other.

With Sotomayor’s confirmation, Princeton will have graduated more U.S. Supreme Court Justices than any other undergraduate institution in U.S. history. Harvard College and Yale College have each graduated ten. (It helps, of course, to have been founded prior to the American Revolution!)

Judge Sotomayor seems highly likely to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate but it is not guaranteed. In recent times Supreme Court confirmations have become highly politicized and even personally vicious. Judge Sotomayor was being dragged through the mud by her opponents even prior to today’s nomination. It’s a very tough process.

"Princeton alumna and trustee Sonia Sotomayor has been nominated by President Barack Obama to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. If confirmed, she would be the court’s first Latina justice.

She currently sits on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit.

“What Sonia will bring to the court is not only the knowledge and experience acquired over the course of a brilliant legal career, but the wisdom accumulated from an inspiring life’s journey,” Obama said in announcing her nomination May 26 at the White House. . . . (continued)
