<p>Not necessarily. Particularly in the research-intensive schools, you could pursue a career in research/academia.</p>

<p>You could also quit and join a hedge fund.</p>

<p>Some medical schools are designed to train academics, it's true, but academic clinicians. They'll be perfectly happy if you become an academic basic scientist, I'm sure -- it's not like they'll demand their degree back -- but the idea of medical school is that you're training to be a physician.</p>
