I'm in 10th grade in a HS of 2,500 kids in Norfolk, Virginia. I'm the type of kid that is very intelligent, yet lazy and non-ambitious. Everybody, including my teachers, think that I am very bright.. and now I'm starting to realize that I must try in school if I want to get into my dream college of NYU. Oh, and I'm African-American.

Weighted GPA= 3.2929
Class Rank= 175/585
I'm enrolled in one AP class (AP EUROPEAN HISTORY) and am about to take the AP Exam on May 7th.

I'm a member of FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) and have competed at the regional level (Hampton Roads VA) and the state level (State of VA) and am going to Nationals in Nashville, TN.

I have a strong plan to get 3 A's and a B every sememster for the rest of HS.

If this works out, by the end of 11th grade, I will have a 3.9 GPA. By the end of 12th grade, I would have a 4.22 GPA.

I plan to be enrolled in 5 AP classes by the time I graduate. I'm currently enrolled in Pre-Calculus as a sophmore. I plan to run for President of FBLA next year. I play tennis. I'm Black.

My question to you is.... an African-American... with a 4.2 weighted GPA... clubs, sports, and volunteer work. What would my chances of getting into NYU be.?

hey 3.9 gpa would be great with regard to average nyu statistics. just keep studying (even though things you study could be a tad tedious.) Gpa is important, but it’s not the only thing in an application.

im not sure how youre unweighted gpa looks but i had a pretty bad 3.2-3.3 UW fresh+soph year then a 3.95 junior year and was accepted into NYU Stern RD. make sure you do really well your junior year.

Make sure that GPA only includes your core academic classes, so no physical education or electives that arent academic in nature. Since you only mentioned planning for four grades every semester, I’m guessing you know this already. Good luck!

So, if I shoot for the stars… and get a 4.2 GPA, with a heavy course load (all I take is honors/AP classes), with extracurriculur’s pertaining to what I want to study (business), and volunteering in my city… I’d have a high chance of getting accepted?

I know this is “what if…” but I need some affirmation that if I give it my all, I would be rewarded with the honor of going to school at NYU.

I think that if you bring up your grades, take challenging courses, write an awesome essay, get a leadership position or two in your extracurricular activities, and get a decent SAT score, you’ll have a really good shot of getting in. Also, make sure you get good recommendations from your teachers! Look for the teachers who will work hard on the letter (some in my school have been known to write one small generic paragraph for students while others write detailed recommendations that are two pages long). Also, if you get to know your teachers well, you’ll probably get a better recommendation. Good luck!

Bring up your grades, but honestly, if you’re an African-American, and you have a decent GPA, you will get in. I’m a white christian girl and I was waitlisted with a 3.35. You really won’t have a problem.

I agree with everything cloudyafternoons is telling you.
BUT do not think for one moment that just because you are african american you will get in as the other poster stated.

You have to work hard and rigorous like anyone else. That is a big mistake that a lot of people make. The assumption that you will get in just because you are AA.
