I’m going to be a sophomore in college in May and have been asked so many times what it was I wanted to major in. I originally took a gap year last year because even back then I wasn’t sure, but I didn’t want to end up giving up so I enrolled and went in as undeclared. Now, I’ve met with different advisors a few times but they haven’t necessarily been the best in helping what “suits me” I guess. I’m all over the place with this decision, one moment I want to do pre-med bio and then the next I want to do Political Science with a minor in Arabic. As long as there’s little to no math, I’m fine with a major I just CANNOT decide. Help please?
Make a list of things you enjoy doing. Then think about how and if you can turn one of them into a career.
My best advice would be to first ask yourself why you thought of med school and why you came up with political science to find out more about what you are looking for: money, helping people, excitement and adventure, etc. Then start researching those occupations. If someone you know is a doctor or knows a doctor well go talk to them- what are their hours like, what’s the stress like, what do they like or not like about their jobs. Unless you are not looking for a specific occupation but rather just a major that interests you and you’ll find out where to apply it later (which is the way many go), you’ll want to know what it’s like to spend 40 or more hours of your life every week doing that job.
