i posted this on the brown board, but i felt like it might be more relevant here:

so, i'm a freshman at dartmouth/brown reject. i've been pretty ambivalent about how i feel about dartmouth for a while, and i think im starting to realize i'd be a lot happier at a place like brown. it's purely a matter of the social scene. i'm sick of feeling like the only people i can relate to here are the ones who don't "fit in," who complain about how dartmouth is misogynistic and fratty and homophobic. i didn't want to go to a school to ***** about how its social scene sucks, no matter how great of an education i'm getting (and that is a big redeeming factor).

i've got stellar grades so far, i'm incredibly active in extracurricular stuff, and i'd get some great prof recs -- i figure i've got a good a shot as anyone if i tried to transfer. only problem is, i didn't realize i'd want to do this in time to apply, and now, if i'm gonna go through with it, it looks like i'd matriculate junior fall.

does that seem like a waste of time? i feel like junior year is really late to be switching schools, making a whole new set of friends and vying for recognition in a school's academic system (you know, research fellowships and theses and all that crap). what do you guys think? do juniors from other schools have trouble "fitting in," having come into the game so late?

also, as a side note, anyone know what financial aid is like for transfers at schools like brown? im getting a full ride here at dartmouth since im pretty poor... could i expect something comparable?

hey, i know you have many questions but it never hurts to try. it looks like youre going to have to go there another year unfortunately and of course it is challenging to be a junior for that 2 remaining years at any new school but i believe brown has housing for all its transfers to live together and clearly youre an active person. its where you belong, its where youll fit! and as far as fa, brown is no stingy uchicago, and appeals always seem to work. if it doesnt work out, hey dartmouth was (technically) great!

Brown is the only Ivy that is need aware for transfer admissions. It is also very tight on FA for transfers. From their website:

http://financialaid.brown.edu/Cmx_Content.aspx?cpId=56

"All transfer applicants will be admitted to Brown on a need-aware basis starting for the 2005-2006 academic year. Need aware means that financial need will be taken into account in making the admission decision. Financial assistance is available on a limited basis to assist transfer students, who enter fall 2005 or later, in covering the cost of a Brown education. To be considered for financial assistance students must apply for financial aid when they make their initial transfer application.Students who do not apply for and receive financial assistance with their initial application, but suffer a dramatic change in a family’s financial situation will be reviewed on a case by case basis."

ugh that's so obnoxious. why do they have to be so stingy!? lol, these are the things that make me hesitant about brown, too. it hear there are some subtle class issues which all of the hipsters don't really understand.

lol one of my friends at Brown said that he chose it because the people at Brown are down to earth and aren't snobby (he specifically said "snobby like those Harvard people"). But... he uses a $600 wallet.

Brown does have a new FA policy for low income families, but you should call to make sure it applies to transfers as well as freshman applicants. However, the negative is that while they might give you a good FA package, you may have a more difficult time getting accepted due to their need aware policy.
