For all the Texas, Chicago area, and Alabama girls and parents, several workshops and info sessions have been planned to help those who are trying to navigate the recruitment process. These are great events and I would encourage you to go if at all possible!!

They have several other events worth attending!!

Thank you so much for posting this! I am currently trying to sort out if I can go to the preview weekend in a couple of weeks with my parents. The amount of money to go down to Alabama for a single day event is really hard to get past for my parents and I. Would one of these events (the event in Hinsdale would be the one I would attend) help make up for any information I miss from the preview weekend if I can’t go? I’m so nervous about finding recommendation letters and getting information on costs of sororities, greek life, etc. I really want to attend the preview weekend, but, at this point, it would just be too pricey and take too long since my dad and I would be driving down (12 hours) and my mom would be flying in on Saturday. What kind of information would we get at these sessions and how much would be left out compared to what we would learn at preview weekend? Thank you for all of your help navigating these processes! :)

Alabama Preview will be specific to Alabama recruitment, where the Hinsdale event will be an overview of recruitment in general. IF there is any way you can go to Alabama Preview I would go. In the past girls did not attend and they most definitely did fine because they had multiple recs for each house and were prepared. My biggest concern is that the house tours part of Preview is going to be run like Ice Water Teas (I have this on the QT from my local Panhellenic). So that being said I think it’s important to be apart of house Tours. I am absolutely sure that I can walk you step by step through the Alabama recruitment, that I would help you to understand the recruitment process if you think that Preview is undoable. PM me and we will set up a time to talk. You should go to the Hinsdale event but it will not take the place of going to Preview.

FaithLoveHope, is there another family you could travel with (instead of coming with your parents)?

We’re trying to work through travel arrangements and my mom is trying her best to get off of work so we can go to the weekend. Thank you so much for offering assistance ahpimommy! I finished my resume like you advised when we emailed back and forth a while ago, so I’d love for you to take a look if you have the chance. I know a few women who can write my recommendation letters, but I’m not sure where to look for letters if I cannot find them just by asking around. How do I get in touch with a local panhellenic association?

There are only two girls that I know who are going to Alabama from my area and neither is going to preview, so I don’t think I would be able to travel with another family. We could drive down if my mom gets off work and save money on the plane ticket, but she has training that day making it hard for her to get the day off.

I received information about the Panhellenic preview but I’m from MI so attending is not an option unfortunately. I was just wondering if anyone knew details about the expenses of being a member of a sorority at Bama. I know there are a lot of expenses for new members but I read somewhere that it costs around $4,000 a year just to be a member!

^^^search past threads. You will find lots of information regarding the cost of sorority dues/fees/extras. The $4,000 number is probably not going to be a true estimate. At minimum, I would guess an average of $5,500 for the first year. That number INCLUDES mandatory meal plan. You can opt-out of university meal plan for a fee then pay those savings toward house dining plan.

WOW! That’s pretty crazy. My sister is in a sorority at Central MI and she only has to pay around $400 per semester. And apparently that’s a typical price for sororities here. Granted it doesn’t cover food but it’s still a fraction of the cost of Bama sororities. Is there a reason why they are so expensive? I must say this is rather disheartening. I was thoroughly looking forward to joining greek life but I will be having an extremely difficult time scraping up enough money to pay for out of state tuition let alone another $5.5k for membership dues…
