Does anyone have any recommendations of good books or sites that would have appropriate monologues for BFA acting auditions for a male teenager?
The Drama Bookshop has lists of monologues by age, gender and genre.
My son and I are obsessed with monologues right now, so thanks Jkelly. For others, here’s a link: http://www.dramabookshop.com/monologues.
You can also call the Drama Bookshop for additional help/guidance!
I read the NYT theater reviews looking for young male parts now.
I once saw a tip that made sense to me: get a monologue book (with monologues from plays). Find monologues that appeal to you. Do NOT use those monologues (because monologues in monologue books are usually overdone), but instead, seek out other plays by the same playwrights and see if THOSE plays have any good monologues.
My son and I went to the Drama Book Shop and they pointed us to a great resource. Title: The Ultimate Scene & Monologue Sourcebook by Ed Hooks. Instead of the usual books of random monologues from unknown plays, it has 1,000 entries with descriptions of material from 300 modern (mostly well known) plays. It is well organized with good descriptions to really help you find something appropriate. In many cases it even gives you the exact page of a script where the monologue/scene can be found. Of course we were lucky to be able to immediately grab the play from the DBS shelves. But for anyone who intends to do this for a lifetime, it is a resource that will be valuable for a long time, not just for college auditions. It is not specific to young actors, but it does provide age ranges of the characters. Well worth the $20.
