South Carolina Honors Program admissions 2023

@earlene92 RD. Congrats, sounds like you got a big package

Ha! We did not! Same small envelope for us today

@2019ohiomom But that’s ok- we toured choice 2 this past weekend and fell in love!

@2019ohiomom What was your major?

@earlene92 I think bio, she’s most interested in neuroscience but that is a minor at USC. This is a contender but she doesn’t have a #1 quite yet.

@2019ohiomom Good Luck to her! She will find her place!

My son got small envelope too. Oh well, now he’s hoping for Capstone. He’s still considering attending SC regardless of not getting into Honors College because of a generous scholarship offer from Gamecocks. One thing we’ve learned about college process is to be flexible, as there will be some bumps in the road.

@jimmym Why do you think small envelope means a no for Honors? I think this thread has mixed responses of general admission and honors if I’m reading it correctly. I think those referring to the large YES are the main admissions packets. Not totally sure though!

@doglover2001 The applicants accepted into Honors will receive an additional large envelope “You’re in! SCHC”

@jimmymThere’s a lot of factors to consider. Remaining open minded is really key. My daughters first choice may not compete with the money USC has offered so far, and so she will have to really consider that. If the 2 offers are worlds apart then you have to be flexible.
Good luck!!

We got our small “no” envelope a few minutes ago. It was sort of expected it with a 31ACT, but are still hoping for Capstone and at least the in-state tuition offer. My D’s initial acceptance said she would get “at least 10K/year”, which is not nearly enough to consider when we haver Florida Bright Futures. However, we thought admitted students day was fabulous and the Arnold School of Public Health seems pretty impressive.

Frustrating to have received the small ‘no’ envelope (honors) today for my son. Getting into college has certainly changed since my personal experience many moons ago! My son has 35 ACT, 1580 SAT, 4.65 GPA, multiple APs, five years Jazz and Wind Ensemble, Swim Team, work history with physicians
just not sure what they are looking for? Any advice to help this mom not feel bummed out for him? :frowning:

@janyon I think everyone reading this thread would be surprised to see those stats accompanied by a “No”.
There’s something better out there for him. Honestly with those numbers he should have his pick.

Thank you @Jce528 - I really do appreciate your comments. I just want him to find his ‘place’ - he really did feel a connection with USC when we visited

@janyon I feel your pain, at a different school. We are from PA and my daughter hasn’t been able to visit USC yet. While she’s honored and excited that she was offered a spot at the honors college it’s hard for her to be super excited because she hasn’t been able to experience it in real life yet. Meanwhile, she’s been assuming for the last few years that she would be going to Pitt and be in their Honors program. She’s definitely the kid that would benefit from a small school or an honors program environment. Pitt’s program isn’t nearly as strong as USCs and yet, she was deferred there and accepted at USC’s (and also Temple’s and Delaware’s). Initially she was REALLY bummed about not getting into Pitt Honors. Since then it’s motivated her to do more research on the other schools she applied to so that she can compare their benefits vs. Pitt without Honors. In the process she’s gotten a lot more enthusiastic about her other schools, including USC.

From posts on multiple schools’ websites, including USCs, it seems like this year has been markedly different from the past at the public schools. USC, Pitt, Penn State and Texas A&M at a minimum have had to significantly delay their decisions on EA and/or Honors decisions. It just keeps getting more and more competitive, especially as the cost of the privates keeps skyrocketing, and with fewer and fewer of them offering merit scholarships. It’s got to make it extremely difficult for the admissions people to choose between all of these wonderful kids!

I really do believe that the vast majority end up at a school that they will love regardless of all of this pain that we’re living through in these final months. Best of luck to you and your son!

Thank you @MominPA2017 - I have to hope this will all work out! Best of luck to your daughter and her decision on schools!

Sorry, I wasn’t clear. We got the small envelope and did open it to see the bad news on honors college!

We got our denial today as well. Got to be some outstanding students in that honors college. I don’t know what else my daughter could have done to improve her resume. But like I said, it’s all good, and she will end up where she’s meant to be.
Congratulations again to all who got in.

@janyon. It’s a beautiful campus, and he should still consider it. He can still have an outstanding academic career there.
My daughter got denied today as well. 1480 SAT, 4.7 GPA, AP and Honors galore, 2 varsity sports, captain, NHS, LHS, clubs and a part time job.

The way i see it, it frees her up for other things and experiences.

Chin up!!

Thank you @Jce528 - sorry to hear regarding your daughter’s news also. I agree, things happen for a reason and I know what is meant to be is just around the corner! Is your daughter still considering USC? My son will keep it on his list. Good luck with your daughter’s decision!
