Southern Colleges for a Liberal Student

New college of Florida

UNC Asheville or UNC Chapel Hill are fairly liberal. University of Richmond in VA is liberal as well.

@julie846 I I recommend that you follow @ClarinetDad16 s advice and do your homework regarding southern schools. That being said , once you have narrowed down your choices, I’d make a visit to campus to make an informed, yet personal decision regarding fit so you don’t make a decision that you “regret”

I suggest the OP purchase a copy of “Choosing the Right College”, and then apply to all of the schools they do not recommend.

Want a LAC? Try Southwestern, north of Austin.

Emory and Tulane are great suggestions. You mentioned U of South Carolina, which is an especially good option if cost is a consideration. Your likely merit award would bring your cost to about $22,500 for year 1 (including tuition, R&B, but not books, travel, etc.). SC Honors College is consistently ranked as one of the best public honors colleges in the U.S. Acceptance is not automatic (you would need to write additional essays to apply) but your stats would make you competitive.

My D (from PA) leans left, and she is more than comfortable there. While many students are from SC and NC, she also knows people from NJ, NY, Maryland, Ohio, Illinois, and Connecticut. Both Bernie Sanders and Marco Rubio appeared on campus earlier this year and both sessions were very well-attended.

Some students look preppy, but many dress like typical college kids up north (hoodies or sweaters with jeans or cropped knit pants, t-shirts with those little Nike shorts–I forget the nickname for them–etc.) Oh, although the girls do wear black dresses to football games (sundresses, knits, not super dressy, with cowboy boots or sandals/flip flops).

Anyway, might be more info than you wanted, but my D (who also wanted to head south and had similar stats) really liked all three of these schools.
