Southern Methodist University

Anyone have any knowledge of it? And how's the business program?

Thanks

All I've heard about it is that it's incredibly preppy, as in A&F everywhere and a bunch of rich kids. I don't know about its academics though.

Business is pretty good. I've got a lot of friends that are there or are going there next year. The business program is pretty solid (it's what SMU is most proud of) and a lot of businesses interview on campus, but it's been on a bit of a decline in recent years. It is pretty conservative and preppy (and white), but there are a lot of normal kids, too. The preppiness (is that a word?) is probably amplified because it's in a really rich neighborhood in Dallas. It's not far from Deep Ellum, which is a really fun place that has a lot the nightlife for Dallas (bars, restaurants, concerts and clubs). It's a pretty good school all around and the campus is beautiful with pretty good architecture, but I'm sure it's not for everybody. Pretty Greek-oriented, too, but I've never heard of this being much of a problem.

Am I required to take religious classes?

If you have decent grades and decent scores, you'll most likely get some amount of merit aid. Greek system is in full force, lots of partiers, etc. Really good acting program. Pretty campus.

No, I don't think you have to take any religious classes.

Probably top 5 preppy/Greek/RICH kid schools. Also very conservative. Uhh...

i'm from the Dallas area... and I know a lot of people who have went or are going there.

I don't think its a very good school, and I wouldn't suggest anyone to go there. Its waaaay over-priced for the education you're getting... and you're not even paying for the name, because no-one outside of Texas thinks SMU is a good school.

If you're from Texas and want to go to a good business school, go to UT-Austin. Hands down the best business education in Texas. Or, if you want a smaller private school, go to Rice... you'll pay relatively the same price as SMU, with a better education and name-value.

Not to dis on my friends who go there, but SMU is really not a good place to go. There is little to no college-experience, and the education is on par with University of Houston. If you were doing your MBA there, then maybe it'd be good, but don't waste your money on an undergrad degree there.
