So guys, what's the weirdest blitz you've gotten so far?

*sigh. It really really sucks that not even our Blitzmail accounts are safe from stupid SPAM emails. I wonder how they even get our blitzmail addresses in the first place?

Lol I haven’t gotten a spam blitz yet…
-knocks on wood, crosses fingers, and looks around suspiciously while reaching for a knife-

on a sidenote, i don’t get this whole “blitz” thing. it just seems like a regular email to me.

like what special stuff can we do with “blitz”?

Really? I’ve gotten weird spam, and even had spam waiting in my inbox for me when I first checked my email. You’ve gotten no weird emails?

Umm nowadays I think it is essentially just that. e-mail. But back in the ages when e-mail was new, and texting was non-existent, it served as a marvel of technology for communication. I hear it’s largely being eclipsed on campus though, and it not nearly what it used to be in terms of total social communication domination.

whether or not you get a lot of spam will be somewhat dependent on whether you have any nicknames set up, whether you have the spam filter up, and how unique your name is … If a previous student had a similar name or nickname, you can get a lot ‘spam’ based on things that s/he may have signed up for/given out their nicknames for. Check out the “to” field of your ‘spam’, it should provide a clue as to how you can avoid getting it.

Anyway, it’s not too hard to figure out blitzmail addresses … it’s just the names of people who are associated with the College.

And, blitz is still a big deal on campus, though txting and using phones has become more prevalent.

I have a suspicion that facebook might have been a source of the spam; We’re all in the Dmouth network now and that’s the only place where I’ve put forth my blitzmail address. -_-;;

Haha I feel lucky now to have avoided the spam thus far. Though my not-so-common name might be helping me out. Hmm that would be quite an annoying way to get revenge on someone though. Sign them up for ungodly amounts of spam.

I’ve only gotten spam through my short blitz nicknames. Spambots might routinely include, say, abc AT dartmouth.edu in their mass mailings, while they will not include, say, Sonia.M.Sotomayor AT dartmouth.edu . It doesn’t seem to happen much.

I do know a '12 who had the same name as an '08. She ended up getting a lot of the '08’s mail.

Just put on a spam filter, that’ll kill most of it.

You’ll come to see the value of blitz after a few weeks…for how dartmouth kids use it, it’s pretty good. They’re finally updating it though and there should be a new version in the next year

I don’t have a nickname. I think limetime’s facebook theory may be correct, since… how the heck else would anyone have gotten my blitzmail address? My name is NOT common. Anyway, I’ve gotten some pretty weird ones…

Buffalowizzard, i’m a 13. All of our email addresses seem to be firstname.m(middleinitial).lastname@dartmouth.edu. Is the the case with past years, or were y’all’s just firstname.lastname?

^ it’s first.m.last for those who have a name that works like that.

other people have f.middle.last if that’s what they prefer, or first.last if there is no middle initial. or multiple middle initials are possible too. etc.

But yea, for most ppl it’ll be first.m.last

how do you create a nickname?

Oh haha thanks rightnotleft. I guess anyone could have answered that question… Not just buffalowizard :)

Did anyone else get a video in a blitz a couple weeks ago? Not gonna go into details… You probably know which one I’m talking about if you got it…

Yeah, I started getting spam for my nickname as well. I almost wanted to give people “nickname@dartmouth.edu” as my email address as that would be awesome.

it doesnt matter what name format you use, if you type someone’s last name and it’s unique they’ll get it, otherwise it’ll prompt you to choose from those people with that last name.

so if your name is johann.s.bach@dartmouth.edu you could just blitz johann, bach, j.bach…you get the idea.

this is separate from nicknames which you can set as separate identifiers for your blitz address

^wow that’s pretty cool. I kinda wanna try that, but i’m afraid something’ll go wrong and a random stranger will get an even more random blitz from me haha

haha yeah i still fear that from time to time…but the systems pretty good
