@JustMeTee I’m kind of in the same situation. I want to go to Spelman, but I haven’t received any scholarship letter yet, so I guess I didn’t get one. I would be $120,000 in debt, which is unacceptable especially since I’m eligible for a full ride at Howard.

@kierraa05 I debated between Spelman and Howard before too. I really liked Spelman, but money talks!!

@rhythmandbible Do you go to Howard? If so, how do you like it?

@kierraa05 No, I’m a high school senior now, but I decided on another school altogether. My best friend is going to Howard though and another friend’s sister goes there. She’s incredibly smart and she loves the school. She said she was going to Howard even if she had to sleep in a tent!

I think I am going to attend the other HBCU rather than Spelman. It doesn’t make sense to pay 44,000 dollars a year to not have air conditioning in the dorms and leave campus to go to the library.

I thought I would update the forum just so everyone knows what happened to me. As a person that wondered this a lot when I frequented this site, I hope this helps someone. I will be attending Spelman next fall because I received a scholarship for tuition all four years. My mother badgered the admissions office when I couldn’t, and I found out on April 29th. For prospective Spelmanites, I would suggest calling your admissions counselor as much as possible. Mine fought for me and got me a scholarship after I had lost all hope. Most of the rest of my costs will be covered with federal grants. I can’t wait to meet my current Spelman sisters and my future Spelman sisters!

@kierraa05 Congratulations!!!

Hello, I have been accepted but I haven’t received any financial information… at all. has it happened to any of you?

Just as a note…many HBCUs (and older colleges in general) don’t have A/C in their freshman dorms, and the walk “off-campus” to the library is probably shorter than students’ walks to the library, if they live on large campuses. I currently work at a large public university and it would take me the same amount of time to walk from my office on campus to the library on campus as it would for me to have walked from my residence hall at Spelman to Woodruff Library. And it would take me much longer to walk from some of the residence halls on the far west end of this campus to the library.

Hi! I know this is a year later, but I applied Early Decision to Spelman this year, and I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions:
- what was your GPA, SAT etc that qualified you for a full scholarship?
- do you know if early decision candidates find out any earlier than other candidates about scholarships?
- are you happy with your decision of Spelman College at this point?
