I want to study abroad. I know it will cost a lot of money. I would like to ask some tips of spending less money in my daily life. What can I do? How can I spend less money on food, clothes, books...?

I’m in the same position you’re going to be in. Having been abroad for a whole year, I’ve really had to learn to stretch my budget.

As far as food goes, start cooking your own meals if you have access to a kitchen. Learn quickly what foods are cheap and buy store brands. I legitimately live off of peanut butter, bread, pasta, and sauce on the weekends. If you live in a dorm and have a meal plan, take advantage of that option as much as possible. If the local cuisine is good, go out to eat once every few weeks.

With clothes, I would try to bring as much as you can from home because in a lot of countries, clothing is much more expensive. Research local weather conditions before hand, bring good walking shoes, and don’t forget some formal wear (renting a suit/ tux or buying a dress is especially expensive).

I haven’t had to buy a book for any of my classes yet (this may not be the case for everyone) . Instead of using 1-3 main texts, my classes require me to read certain articles from a long list of books. Those books are set aside in the library and we can take them out for 4 hours at a time. It’s a pain to always have to go to the library, but it saves you a ton of money. Don’t forget about using e-journals and electronic databases as well.

If you make smart decisions, you can make a dollar go a long way. If you want some more tips, shoot me a message [Contact Me | The Study Abroad Blog](<a href=“The Study Abroad Blog - Nate Nault”>The Study Abroad Blog - Nate Nault)
