What is an appropriate amount of spending money per week at Northwestern? I’m going to be a freshman and plan on rushing. My parents will pay for all toiletries and transportation to/from campus and then contribute a certain amount per week to help me with spending money. To help determine how much I should ask them to contribute per week I’m trying to budget how much I will spend per week.
I’ve been planning on $75/week, broken down as follows:
$30 Food
$15 Social Activities
$15 transportation
$15 random
Hint: Ask for $1,000 per week - then let them talk you down to $250. Everyone’s happy!
But SRSLY - hopefully some recent kid will reply! As a dad, I gave my 2 kids ZERO money. They did work study for spending money. I don’t even know how much they spent a week.
My daughter graduated NU four years ago. I started her at $50/week, but that proved to be just a little low, so I bumped it to $60, which was fine. Given the passage of time, I would think that $75 these days would be about right.
My son just graduated NU. His allowance was $200/month.
My son graduated last year. He had work study and used that for spending money. He spent very little - maybe $30 a week the first 2 years in the dorms, but he is generally a frugal person. Your request seems reasonable.
