How much is a reasonable amount to expect to spend weekly in college? I will be attending VSU in south Ga, its a small town...

The food on the campus is really good so eating out will be like once a month or so...

There is a amusement park that I have a yearly pass too that includes free putt putt and go carts, as well as all parking. So that will be my entertainment unless I go to the dollar theatre....

I have $1,000 in my account to tide me over until I get a job in the second semester.

if everything but toiletries is paid for (i.e., food, housing, books, tuition, gas/have no car, utilities) then you could theoretically get by on as little $20/month, but realistically, $15-20 is probably reasonable if all else is paid for.

I'm at NYU so the costs are skewed WAY up but I blow about $400 a month. Adjust that down for cost of living (COL index in New York City, NY=212, NYU area should be higher as the NYC index includes Queens, Brooklyn, etc. Say about 250).

You're lucky. A movie here in NYC will set you back $12.50.

Plan on at least $100 a month. I can't imagine going out to eat costing less than $15 a person all in. A good rule of thumb is all in=cost on the menu+30%.

I very rarely spend more than $10 when I go off campus for a meal...

there will be times you'll want to go eat out even if you do like the campus food, but it probably doesn't have to be that often. I probably spend about $10-15 a week, but then most of my friends are fairly careful about money too, so limiting what I spend isn't a problem.

For some of us, going out to eat means hitting McDonald's once a week. :p

Also, if you're trying to save money while going out, get water instead of a soda. Most places charge at least $1.75 for a soda, and that's pretty significant when the rest of your meal is only $6.

If you decided that you wanted to live off of $5 a month, you could do it as long as you have discipline (assuming you don't need to buy gas, housing, and things of that sort). If you're worried about spending all of your money, don't make it easily accesible (I found that hiding my ATM card in my room helps since I get tempted to use it when I am out and I only carry $25 cash). If you want to know how much you will probably spend, go do those things and keep track of how much you spend on each thing and then base it off of that.

I could probably go on ~20-50 a week, but that is only factoring in entertainment.

To save money, take advantage of when clubs or your college offers free movies, tickets, pizza, that sort of thing. You can save yourself a lot by seeing the month-old movie at your school for free instead of the brand-new one for 8 dollars.

My daughter started with$1800/about $60 a week. You'd think it would have been enough, not!!! She blamed it on the day trips she took with her friends. My reply to her was start taking less trips. haha!!!

Don't forget about laundry costs. My DD was at VSU this past summer and probably spent $10/wk. on washer/dryers alone. As far as the food goes, what is your source of VSU having really good food? DD eats anything and everything, not picky at all, and she was complaining after 1st week on lack of variety and the food being extremely bland. IMO, you might want to up the estimate of 15-20/wk.

I've eaten there several times. I've liked all of it...loved it, in fact. I will be coming home every weekend or every other weekend and highly doubt that i will be doing much laundry at school. VSU is 50 miles from my house....

well, as far as food goes, it really doesn't matter how good the food is, there will get to be a point where you won't be able to handle it anymore. Good way of looking at it is this: its pretty much equivalent to eating at the same restaurant 3 meals a day 7 days a week. Even if its amazing food...it'll get to be repetitive and boring really fast. Personally, I buy groceries as well to be able to eat when I don't want dorm food. Also, count in little extras...theres always coffee stands/markets on campus that will tempt you to spend money...

I second the laundry, I spend at least $5 a week...so you need to spend $25 a month at the absolute least.

You also need to factor in costs such as school supplies, toiletries, extra class expenses, etc. Don't be overly optimistic and think you won't be spending money. Save up as much as you can, it'll only help you.

Overestimate what you're going to spend. If you underestimate, you might end up spending all your money before the end of the term. give yourself a weekly budget and stick to it religiously.
