SPICE China Scholars Program

I’m also really interesting in applying for this program next year (I’m currently in 10th grade)! For people who have applied, what was the process like? For people who were accepted, what was the workload like? Was it manageable to do in addition to regular school?

The process was really simple!

You write a two-page application essay (approach it like a college one), your teacher submits a recommendation letter, there’s a portion for you to talk about your activities/extracurriculars, and that’s about it.

The only difficult part of the application, in my honest opinion, was Surveymonkey. It didn’t work for my teacher, low-key didn’t work for me, and I had to contact them so many times. However, I don’t think this was a common issue, lol.

As for workload, I can’t speak on it yet, but from what friends have said, it is challenging—particularly the final paper. It could be very difficult if you have never been taught to do something like that before. They also tell you in the acceptance email to consider this opportunity carefully. It is rigorous and will demand a lot of time, hence they suggest taking a free block or a lighter course load.

However, I think that you can manage it like any other extracurricular. Understand what your priorities are, have strong time management skills, and be organized.

Let me know if you have any other questions! You can also PM me

Best of luck in the next application cycle!

Oh, also, SPICE’s website has tons of articles of students talking about their experiences as well. You might want to check that out!

@wordgenius Thank you so much! Do you have any idea how selective the program is?

@inflorescent Not sure! They don’t release the numbers officially and don’t tell you even if you ask. However, they are pretty selective, probably around the 15%-25% range depending on what you’re applying for (RSP is the most competitive, I think). But this is also student speculation, lol.
