Spiderman The musical

By her own comments (see #9), LM is not “invested” in this process but excited about it. Now is not the time for wet blankets or “putting a damper on anyone’s excitement,” in my opinion.

I think it is VERY exciting that LittleMermaid had the callback. That is my main reaction…see post 7. For someone who is new at Broadway, it is good to have the total picture. Be very excited and realistic at the same time. There is no doubt in my mind that the callback is exciting and a testament to your talent.

(I agree that LM IS being realistic and said so but the discussion got into general advuce… NOT specific to LM)

I also think the shows being talked about on this thread did open their auditions to those under 18 and appear willing to cast actors under 18, even though some shows will only use those over 18 to depict teenage characters.

Soozievt: We cross-posted. Of course, I am not referring to your posts which were appropriately supportive and are always spot on. I applaud these kids who are actually putting themselves out there (rather than sitting at computers all day!). Reality checks have a way of coming in their own good time for everyone. Excitement for the moment, however, is all too fleeting.

I think LM’s thread just became a jumping off point about casting on the Broadway level…age issues…and also the realism and so on. But it doesn’t take away from how excited we all are for LM! I’m excited mostly cause she had this experience and it was affirming and she got herself out there. She is right that it likely is not gonna come through, though I suppose, one never knows until the show is cast. But it is not worth getting TOO caught up over. It can take lots and lots of auditions to be cast at this level, if ever. Many people read these threads and so it is good to make some general statements and these are not about LM.

Hey does anyone know of anyone already getting a callback for this role?

I am planning on auditioning for Peter Parker/Spider man next week in Chicago. I am so excited!

littlemermaid13 or anyone else who knows, when do you know if they will call you back for the next round of auditions?

kconnelly-i don’t know of anyone called back for that role, sorry! good luck!
bboy-i’m not sure how they will do it at chicago, but they called me the day of my audition, and the callbacks were the next day! break a leg, tell me how it goes!!!

Yeah I only saw people getting callbacks for the mary jane/peter parker roles at the audition so I was just curious if anyone else who tried out for the villain could share their story!

were you at the seattle ones? did you get a callback?

no I was at orlando and didn’t get a callback…it said on the sheet that they may do callbacks at a later time?? maybe that was just trying to be nice or keep everyone hopeful.

A Girl in my Daughters studio at NYU is workshopping Spiderman this summer. I don’t know what role she got but it is a big one. She has been going to rehearsals this week.

yeah I’m pretty sure I would have heard something by now but oh well, still was a cool experience.

Also, if this person is already in rehearsals, why are they even having all these open calls, especially the upcoming ones?

I’m with you. If they had found what they wanted in New York, they would have stopped after the auditions they held there last summer.

My daughter will be auditioning for the Spiderman musical in Chicago next week. I was wondering if any of you had thoughts about song selection for the audition. I understand that they are looking for pop/rock songs. Here are a few of her choices. Do you think any of these would be good or too overdone?
Alone - Heart
Total Eclipse of the Heart - Bonnie Tyler
It’s all Coming Back to Me Now - Celine Dion

actressmom, I know two kids also involved in rehearsals for that workshop. Rumor has it that the additional workshop this summer is the result of a decision to push this project back once again.

An open call process like this isn’t unusual, even if the roles are already cast. With a production that is going to be so incredibly expensive, they are going to want to have a good supply of options for future casting.

To Tinamay: If she can nail it, I’d go with Heart, one of the greatest female rock bands ever. It’s no coincidence that they held auditions in Seattle given the city’s rock pedigree.

Tina:

Alone is one of the most overdone pieces at any professional audition requiring rock songs. Keep in mind that Bono is writing the music to Spiderman, so something more emo-rock sounding may be better. The Celine Dion is a better choice, if you daughter really nails it - but something a little “edgier” would be even better. I’m too old to suggest what may fit that bill  - but kids generally know what the hip stuff is.

Yeah I mean the contestants on American Idol have completely ruined the song “Alone”, at least one person each season sings it. Its a pity b/c its such a great song.

It’s hard to find a rock song that isn’t overdone and that has a high belt. I don’t think anyone can outsing Celine, so no matter how good it is, it isn’t as good as the original. I would like her to sing a guy’s song instead, maybe from Journey or Queen so she won’t be compared to the original. But, of course, she’s not listening to me. The audition is next week and she knows that she’s going just for the fun of it because the odds of booking the lead in this new musical (with open calls all over the country) are slim to none. So, it looks like she’s gonna sing something she already knows - either Alone, Power of Love, or I Surrender.
On another note, did anyone go to the open call for Bye Bye Birdie on Broadway? We were in Puerto Vallarta at the time, so my daughter didn’t go, but one of her friends is going to a second callback on Monday for the role of Ursulla. (She went through an agent - not the open call). I’m so excited for her. She’s come so close so many times, and I think this time it just might happen for her.

do you guys think maybe there’s still a chance for a callback once all these open calls are done? or do you feel like it would have been something immediate. Just curious because on the blue sheet they gave out, it said there was a good possibility that you could be called at a later date because they change their minds, etc. But this sheet also said they wouldn’t be doing immediate callbacks but I saw a few people get one…so, just confused.
